Cougars Get Back to Winning

APPLETON, Wis.- It didn't take long for the Kane County Cougars (11-2, 47-34) to get back in the win column as they beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (5-8, 28-55) by a score of 6-1 at Fox Cities Stadium Tuesday afternoon. After their winning streak came to an end Monday evening, the Cougars have now won 16 of their last 18 contests.
Wisconsin starter Devin Williams (2-5) did not put up a good case for his team as a couple of wild pitches allowed both Ildemaro Vargas and Cody Regis to score in the first inning. Marty Herum put validity into those runs as he followed with a triple before scoring on Coling Bray's double for a 3-0 Cougar lead. Williams left after three innings.
After Chuck Taylor singled home Henry Castillo, Wei-Chieh Huang (4-1) had a four-run lead to work with as faced the minimum through the first four innings despite two hits and a walk. Huang uncharacteristically had trouble controlling pitches walking four batters in the game and forcing in the first and only Wisconsin run in the fifth. The Taiwanese right-hander finished the day with five innings of one-run baseball
Tom Jameson tossed two scoreless innings, including a wild bottom of the seventh. With Timber Rattlers at the corners and one out, Tucker Neuhaus flied out to left in which Sthervin Matos intended to tag up and score on. Victor Reyes' throw went wide of home plate up the first base line and tempted Mitch Meyer to take off for second. Jameson picked up the loose ball and retired Meyer and second base to end the inning. Despite the third out being recorded, the Cougars still wanted to appeal Matos' tag play. Once Jameson picked up the baseball and tossed it to third, the umpire ruled Matos out and the run discredited.
The offense continued with run scoring singles from Bray in the seventh and Regis in the eighth.
Cody Geyer and Zac Curtis also threw scoreless inning in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Cougars now shift the series to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for the final two games of the four-game set. Wednesday's game begins at 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
