Clinton LumberKings News Release
South Bend, IN -- The Clinton LumberKings scored more runs in the seventh inning of Monday night's contest with South Bend than they had in any entire game previously. Seven runs crossed the plate, highlighted by Joe Kemp's bases-clearing triple as the LumberKings would go on to break a five-game losing streak with a 14-3 win over the Silver Hawks.
Truan Mehl got things going early for the LumberKings, plating a run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and blasting a solo homer to right field in the fifth inning. Both runs came on Silver Hawks' starter Cody Evans, and gave the L-Kings a 2-1 lead.
Evans gave way to Enmanuel Duran in the seventh, and that's when the LumberKings broke the game wide open. Seven players reached base against Duran, with all seven scoring including Mehl, Jose Vallejo and Matt Smith on Kemp's triple. Five of the seven runs were earned for Duran, who also committed a throwing error on a botched force out attempt at second. Reliever Donald Julio came on after Duran failed to retire a single Clinton Batter. Julio had a tough time as well, allowing two inherited runners to score as the LumberKings would post a seven-run seventh inning.
The LumberKings added more in the eight and ninth innings against Julio and Silver Hawks reliever Kyle Wright. Three more runs would be posted in the eighth against the combination of Julio and Wright, and John Mayberry would provide two more runs in the ninth.
Mayberry belted a two-run home run to deep left field off Wright to cap the scoring for the LumberKings. It was Mayberry's fourth blast of the year, and his third in as many days. Freddie Thon and K.C. Herren each added two RBI's apiece, both with three-hit nights.
LumberKings starter Jake Rasner did not pitch enough innings to gain the victory, but was effective in 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five. Jose Marte (2-1) picked up the win in relief with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit baseball. The losing pitcher for the Silver Hawks was starter Cody Evans (0-2) despite the fact that he allowed only two runs in the game.
The win for the L-Kings improves their record to 6-13, still last in the Midwest League West. They had previously lost their last five straight contests and six of their last seven. South Bend falls to 7-12, last in the East.
