Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN -- Kyle Blanks homered and drove in four runs for the Fort Wayne Wizards in a 13-4 rout of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium. Chad Steiner and Josh Alley had key hits for the Wizards.
The Rattlers (8-11) broke out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. A throwing error by left fielder Will Venable allowed the first run to score. Eddy Hernandez knocked in the other run with a fielder's choice.
But, Fort Wayne (11-7) answered with four runs in the bottom of the second. A bases loaded single by Steiner drove in one run. A two-out double off the right field wall by Alley knocked in the other three runs for a 4-2 Wizard lead.
Wisconsin evened the score with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Ron Garth and a sacrifice fly by Chao Kuan Wu.
But, Fort Wayne retook the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Nick Hundley and a run scoring wild pitch.
Blanks blasted a three run homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning to help the Wizards pull away to a 9-4 lead.
Rattler reliever Ruben Flores entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and promptly walked the bases loaded. Hundley drove in a pair of runs with a double for an 11-4 lead. Flores got the batter to popout, but he walked his fourth batter of the inning to reload the bases. That's when Nick Allen replaced Flores. Blanks drove in another run with a single. Steiner finished off the inning -- and the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Josh Geer gave up four runs on nine hits over six innings, but moved his record to 3-0. Rattler starter Marwin Vega got tagged with the loss for giving up nine runs on eight hits with three walks and three wild pitches.
Game two of the series is Wednesday morning. Jose Escalona (2-1, 3.07ERA) is slated to be the starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Fort Wayne sends Fabian Jimenez (0-1, 4.20) to the mound. Game time is 10:00am CDT.
