Burlington Bees News Release

Battle Creek, MI (April 25, 2006) - Mario Lisson's two-out, two-run single in the top of the tenth inning lifted the Burlington Bees (8-11) to a 2-0 win over the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (8-11) at C.O. Brown Stadium tonight. The win snaps the Bees five-game losing streak and is the team's first extra-inning win of the year in four tries.

Bees' starter Carlos Rosa pitched a brilliant game. He set a career-high with eight innings pitched and allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out four. The Bees have two shutouts this season and both have come in games that Rosa has started. The Rays threatened just once, putting runners on the corners with one out in the seventh, but Rosa struck out Christian Lopez and then got pinch-hitter JT Hall to bounce out to end the threat.

Rays' starter Greg Reinhard was impressive with five shutout innings of his own. He allowed just two hits and struck out four. Chris Kelly pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just one hit. Eddie DeLaCruz took over with one out in the top of the ninth and walked Kiel Thibault before retiring the next two batters.

Gilbert De La Vara took over for Rosa in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Neil Walton, but Walton was thrown out trying to take second on a pitch in the dirt on a great throw by catcher Jeff Howell. De La Vara got the next two batters to fly out to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, DeLaCruz struck out Miguel Vega to start the inning before Jose Duarte reached on a throwing error by Walton at shortstop. After the error Antonio Sabatini walked, Valentino Arce flew out to left, and Chris McConnell walked to load the bases with two outs. The Rays brought in Kevin Lynn to face Lisson and Mario hit a 3-1 pitch through the left side to drive in two and get the Bees on the board. Lisson leads the team with 15 RBI.

De La Vara (1-1) struck out Matt Spring to start the tenth, but strike three was in the dirt and rolled away from Howell. Spring took off for first and reached when Howell's throw hit him in the back. De La Vara struck out the next two batters and got Ryan Bethel to bounce out to end the game for the win. DeLaCruz (0-2) got the loss. The Rays had been 3-0 in extra-inning games this year.

The Bees and Rays continue this series tomorrow morning at 10:05 Eastern Time at C.O. Brown Stadium. RH Chris Nicoll (0-1, 1.93) will start for the Bees against RH Jason Cayton (0-2, 7.53) for the Rays. The game will be broadcast live on The Ticket 1360 KBKB AM only with the pre-game show starting at 9:45.
