LANSING - Billy Carnline was nothing short of spectacular in his second start of the season for Lansing as the Lugnuts won their fourth consecutive game by pitching a shutout over the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-0 before 1, 241 fans at Oldsmobile Park Tuesday night.
Carnline started in place of the injured Adrian Martin and tossed six innings while allowing just one hit in the win. Carnline (2-0) retired the last 18 batters that he faced, a streak that extended to 21 batters before Flint Wipke singled in the eighth inning.
The Lugnuts took the lead in the fourth inning when a Cory Patton double plated Brian Bormaster to make the score 1-0. Patton finished the game 4-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI. He is the first Lugnut to garner four hits in a game this season.
Lansing extended the lead in the sixth when Brian Pettway belted his fourth homer of the season over the left-center field to push the lead to 2-0.
Two more runs came across in the seventh to salt the game away for Lansing.
Steve Marek (1-1)took the loss for Cedar Rapids.after throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits.
The Lugnuts (14-5) and Kernels (10-9) will meet again on Wednesday evening at Oldsmobile Park. Lansing's A.J. Wideman (0-1, 4.26 ERA) will face Cedar Rapids' Robert Mosebach (1-0, 1.84 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
