Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The St. Louis Cardinals made a flurry of roster moves Tuesday, responding to injuries to the Swing of the Quad Cities' starting rotation. Phillip Andersen and Cory Meacham have been placed on the seven-day Disabled List, while Jose Martinez, Ashley Hooks, and Josh Wilson have joined the Swing for their upcoming 12-game homestand.
Andersen, who left Monday night's game in the fourth inning after feeling something in his right arm, was placed on the DL with a sprained elbow. After going 5-1 with a 2.96 ERA in 2005 for the Swing, the righthander out of Chandler-Gilbert Community College was 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA through four starts this season.
Meacham, whose DL stint has been backdated to April 24, suffered from shoulder soreness in his right arm during his start on Sunday afternoon. After throwing three scoreless innings, the 37th rounder from Deatsville, Alabama walked three consecutive batters to open his fourth and final inning of work. The product of Alabama Southern Community College is 1-2 with a 6.88 ERA through four starts this season.
Joining the Swing will be an infielder and two pitchers, one of whom will be activated later in the week.
Martinez, 20, joins the Swing from extended spring training after hitting .300 with six home runs and 31 RBI in his 55-game pro debut with Johnson City in 2005. The Venezuelan middle infielder was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in December of 2004, and is rated by Baseball America as the 28th best prospect in the St. Louis farm system.
Ashley Hooks, a righthanded pitcher, also made the trip from extended spring training. The product of Brewton-Parker College was signed as a non-drafted free agent in June of 2005, and spent his debut split between Johnson City and New Jersey. Hooks, 22, went 1-2 last season with a 6.25 ERA, striking out 36 and walking 15 in 36 innings of work out of the bullpen.
While Martinez and Hooks will be active for Tuesday night's game, RHP Josh Wilson is not expected to join the active roster until Friday, when he is slated to take Meacham's turn in the starting rotation against Beloit. A second round pick in 2005, the 19-year-old Texas native was 2-2 with a 4.22 ERA for Johnson City in 2005, fanning 32 while walking 23 in 12 starts. Tabbed by Baseball America as the #23 prospect in the Cardinals' organization, Wilson was selected with the pick St. Louis received after losing free agent Mike Matheny prior to the 2005 season.
The Swing of the Quad Cities currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster will follow this release.
UP NEXT: The Swing will open up a four-game series with the Beloit Snappers Tuesday night, sending LHP Adam Daniels (1-2, 5.63) to the mound against LHP Ryan Mullins (0-0, 5.17). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:15.
NEXT HOMESTAND: The Swing will return to John O'Donnell Stadium on Tuesday to begin a 12-game, 13-day homestand that will be the longest of the season. Quad Cities will welcome in Beloit, Lansing, and South Bend for four games each, and will be home through May 7.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: The Swing of the Quad Cities will close out the month of April with some great promotions. Thursday, April 27 will be a 97 Rock/Pluckers Thirsty Thursday. The first 1,000 fans through the gates on April 28 will be able to take advantage of a poster giveaway, and April 29 will feature the first fireworks night of the year, sponsored by KWQC. The month ends with a Family Fun Day on April 30, complete with clowns, face-painting, and the opportunity for kids to run the bases after the game.
