Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Seven days ago, the Clinton LumberKings used a powerful start from lefthander Zach Phillips to end a five game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Cedar Rapids. On Thursday night, the LumberKings turned to right-hander Juan Jimenez to end a six game slide, and he matched the performance by Phillips, leading the team to a 1-0 win over the Beloit Snappers.

Jimenenz pitched seven innings of shutout ball and reliever Josh Giles blanked the Snappers for an additional two innings, setting up late inning heroics for the lineup. With the game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, the LumberKings manufactured a run as Jose Vallejo led off with a drag bunt single down the first base line. Vallejo then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alberto Martinez and stood just 90 feet away from home plate after a productive groundout by Truan Mehl. Matt Smith delivered the two-out heroics, stroking a line double past Tarrence Patterson in the left field gap. Vallejo came around as the only run on the night for either team.

Giles (W, 1-0) got the decision with two perfect innings, striking out four. Jimenez carried the L-Kings most of the way, allowing just six hits in his seven innings, striking out six. Reliever David Shinskie (L, 4-4) took the loss for Beloit.

Righthander Adam Hawes started the game for the Snappers, pitching six innings of two-hit baseball in a no-decision.

Five different LumberKings registered a hit on the night, none reaching the multi-hit plateau. Smith and John Whittleman posted doubles in the game.

The Clinton LumberKings (20-40) and the Beloit Snappers (30-29) finish out their four-game series at Alliant Energy Field tomorrow night, first pitch set for 7:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
