Shields, Cougars cruise past Rattlers

Appleton, WI - The Kane County Cougars scored four runs in the first two innings Thursday night against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and breezed to a 5-1 win at Fox Cities Stadium. Starter Trey Shields logged seven innings for the third straight time and won his fourth in a row, netting a sixth win to join Vince Mazzaro and Jason Ray as the team leaders. The Cougars have won 17 of their last 22 games and 19 of 27.

Jeff Baisley's ground-rule double in the first off Paul Fagan scored Wes Long, who had walked an stolen second, for an immediate 1-0 lead. Nick Blasi and Raul Padron walked in the second and later scored, as Isaac Omura's sacrifice bunt was thrown away by Fagan. Omura came home on a double play that gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead. The Rattlers got their only tally in the third when Mike Saunders drove in Robby Hudson. Shields (6-5) scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out six in the victory. Brad Kilby retired all four men he faced, and Steve Sharpe struck out the final two batters in the bottom of the ninth to confirm the win. Omura had doubled and scored in the top of the ninth for an insurance run and the 5-1 score. Fagan (2-6) suffered the loss for Wisconsin.

The Cougars (37-23), back to their season-high 14 games above .500, maintained their three-game lead over Peoria with nine games left in the first half. Jared Lansford (4-3, 2.72) takes the hill Friday night at 7:05 CDT in the series finale. The Rattlers (25-35) counter with Harold Williams (1-2, 3.40).
