June 8, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels first half struggles continued Thursday night as they lost their sixth game in a row at Quad Cities, 7-3. Andy Hill (1-2) took the loss for the Kernels as they fell to 29-36 on the season.
The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the second as Dallas Morris singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Stantrel Smith single to right.
The Swing struck for three in the bottom of the third as Simon Williams hit a solo home run and Dan Nelson hit a 2 run shot to make the score 3-1 Swing. They added another run in the fifth on a Henry Guerrero solo homer to give the Swing a 4-1 lead.
Starter Andy Hill pitched seven innings and despite the three home runs, only allowed six hits total and struck out three while walking no one. Kernels reliever Tim Mattison was roughed up for three runs (two earned) in his inning of work as the Swing pounded out four hits and took advantage of a Kernel error to make the score 7-1.
The Kernels ended up with seven hits on the night with Brett Martinez going 2-4 with a double. That double helped key a Kernel rally in the ninth as Mark Trumbo reached on an error and went to third on Brett's double. Trumbo scored on a Danny Borne wild pitch to make the score 7-2 and then Martinez scored the final run of the game on an error by Luis Coto. Borne then struck out Madison Edwards to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
The Kernels will try and get back in the win column on Friday when they wrap up their road trip with a 7 pm game in Davenport. The game can be heard on 1450 KMRY and on the internet at www.kernels.com.
Cedar Rapids returns home on Saturday, June 10th to wrap up the first half of the MWL season with four games sets against Fort Wayne and Beloit. Game time on Saturday is 7 pm and tickets are available for all games by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560, or ordering on-line at www.kernels.com.
