Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 8, 2006) Three pitchers for the Peoria Chiefs (34-26) combined to shutout the Burlington Bees (29-29) on four hits in a 2-0 win at Community Field tonight. The Chiefs lead this series 3-0 and the season series 7-0 over the Bees. The Bees have been shutout six times this season, and now twice by the Chiefs. Tonight was the first time the Bees have been shutout in over a month. The last was a 2-0 loss in game two of a double-header against Dayton on May 1st at Community Field.

Chiefs' starter Jesus Yepez (2-2) worked through 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and four walks for the win. The Bees threatened with two on and one out in the second on singles by Miguel Vega and Kiel Thibault, but Yepez got a double play ball to get out of the inning. The Bees didnt have more than one runner on base at the same time again the rest of the game. Jeff Teasley replaced Yepez after a two-out walk to Jose Duarte in the seventh and got Valentino Arce to flyout to end the inning. Teasley set the Bees down in order in the eighth and Ed Campusano was perfect in the ninth for his Midwest League-leading 18th save of the year, including his fourth against the Bees.

Bees' starter Michael Penn (4-2) had his four-game winning streak snapped despite working a career-high eight innings. He held the Chiefs to just one hit through the first four before Peoria got both of their runs in the fifth. Ryan Norwood led off with an infield single, Mark Reed moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Kyle Reynolds drove him in with a double to right-center. After Penn struck out Jake Muyco, Jonathan Mota singled up the middle to drive in Reynolds for the second run. Davy Gregg followed with a single to put runners on the corners with two away, but was caught stealing to end the inning.

Penn allowed just two more base runners the rest of his time on the mound. He allowed a total of six hits and two walks and matched his season-high with five strikeouts. Kraig Schambough retired the Chiefs in order in the ninth and struck out one.

The Bees are now four games behind the Chiefs for a playoff berth with nine games to play. The Bees remain a half game behind Beloit for third place and are now tied with the Swing of the Quad Cities for fourth after their win over Cedar Rapids tonight.

The Bees and Chiefs wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. All-Star RH Matt Kniginyzky (6-2, 3.12) will start for the Bees against All-Star RH Mitch Atkins (4-1, 1.94) for the Chiefs. The gates open at 6:00 for a T-G-I Bud Night and the kick-off of Mt. Pleasant Community Weekend. There will be fireworks after the game tomorrow sponsored by SEIBUS, J&M Displays, and the Edward Jones Investments Offices of Mike Henderson, Rich Mueller, and Troy Spence in Mt. Pleasant.
