South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - Cesar Suarez was hitting a little better than .300 going into Thursday night's game against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Suarez, playing in his 15th game for the Devil Rays drove in two insurance runs in the eighth inning to lift the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays to a 5-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks.
The Rays were the first to score. With two out in the third, Garrett Groce single to left, stole second and scored on Alex Jamieson's single to right field for a Devil Rays 1-0 lead.
The Hawks rallied to tie in the fifth. Ricardo Sosa led off with a single to center field and Orlando Mercado's single to center put runners at first and second. When Steve Mena flied out to right, Sosa moved to third. Manny Ferrer's infield single to short scored Sosa knotting the game at one.
After scoring a run in the seventh to lead 2-1, the Devil Rays wrested the game from the Hawks in the eighth.
Matt Spring opened the frame by striking out swinging, but reached first on a passed ball by Hawks catcher Orlando Mercado. Chris Cunningham's single to center placed runners at first and second, with Neil Walton's bunt single loading the bases. After Matt Spring was forced at home on Hunter Vick's bunt attempt, John Matulia's sacrifice bunt plated Cunningham for a 3-1 lead. Cesar Suarez then doubled to center field scoring Walton and Vick for the Devil Rays fourth and fifth runs of the game.
Greg Reinhard (1-5) collects his first win since August 7 of 2005 and South Bend's Forest Cory drops to 2-2.
The Silver Hawks close their four game set Friday night with first pitch at 7:00 PM and gates opening at 6:00 PM. Friday AM 960 Weekday Sports Beat will broadcast from the Budweiser Bullpen Bar and Grille with hosts Darin Pritchett and Rick Carter holding court.
