LumberKings Battle for Extra Inning Win

May 22, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Davenport, IA - The Clinton LumberKings survived a 3-run second inning and a ninth inning blown save by Kevin Altman to beat the Swing of the Quad Cities, 6-5 in extra innings. After the Swing tied the game against Altman in the ninth, the LumberKings rallied for a run in the 11th inning to win for the second straight night.

Brian Valichka lead off the 11th inning with a double to left-center field. Speedy Jose Vallejo came on to pinch-run, and beat out a throw at third by Swing reliever Brian Stitt after a sacrifice bunt by David Peterson. With the infield in and runners at the corners, Matt Smith grounded to second baseman Dan Nelson who came home with the throw. Vallejo was hung up in a rundown between third and home, but stayed on the basepaths long enough to allow both Peterson and Smith to advance into scoring position.

Truan Mehl then delivered the game winning hit in unusual fashion, hitting a chopper back to the mound. Stitt fielded the ball cleanly, but Mehl beat the throw at first. Peterson broke home for the winning run, sliding in ahead of the throw from first baseman Adam Rodgers.

Despite the blown save, Altman (W, 1-3) picked up his first victory. He pitched a perfect bottom of the 11th, retiring Midwest League home run leader Randy Roth on a swinging strikeout to end the game.

Mehl's game winning infield single was part of a 3-for-6 night, including two RBI's. He singled home Peterson in the top of the seventh to make it a 4-4 game. The LumberKings took their first lead of the night an inning later as Terry Blunt scored on an RBI groundout by K.C. Herren.

Kyle Rogers got the start for the LumberKings, allowing four runs on four hits through five innings of work. Swing starter Kyle Sadlowski had similar numbers, yielding three runs on five hits through five frames. Stitt (L, 0-1) gave up only the winning run in getting the loss.

With the win, the LumberKings improve to 8-16 on the road, 15-28 overall. The series continues tomorrow at John O'Donnell Stadium, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. Lefthander Zach Phillips (1-2) is slated to start for the L-Kings against right-hander Cory Meacham (2-2) for the Swing.
