West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Anthony Cupps did what no one else has been able to do this season: Shut out the Whitecaps. Cupps threw a four-hit, complete game shutout as South Bend blanked West Michigan, 4-0.
The Whitecaps pitching staff has thrown five shutouts this season.
Luke French suffered his second straight loss even though he threw eight innings for West Michigan and allowed three runs (2 ER) on just four hits.
With three runs in the third inning, South Bend grabbed the lead. Justin Upton lined a two-out, two-run single to left to break the scoreless tie. Leyson Septimo then scored on an error by Whitecaps third baseman Cory Middleton.
Trey Hendricks crushed his sixth home run of the season to lead off the ninth and make the lead 4-0. The blast came against reliever Lavon Lewis, who made his 2006 Whitecaps debut in the ninth.
Pedro Cotto had one of the four West Michigan hits. A single to right in the sixth extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Mike Hollimon had the Whitecaps' only extra base hit with a two-out double in the second.
It was the shortest nine inning game of the season for the Whitecaps at 1 hour and 55 minutes.
Avoiding the First: West Michigan has not lost a series at home this season, but has dropped two of the first three games in this four game set against South Bend.
Do it for the Children: The first of three school day games for the Whitecaps this season will be the series finale on Tuesday. RHP Adam Howard (1-0, 3.09) is scheduled to be on the mound for South Bend against Whitecaps LHP Ramon Garcia (5-1, 1.24). First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. On the Bench with Bret Bakita will be live at Fifth Third Ballpark beginning at 10 a.m. and the Whitecaps Pre Game Show begins at 10:50 a.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at wbbl.com.
