Kane County Cougars News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Kane County Cougars won their season-high sixth consecutive game and moved to a season-best eight games above .500 with a 6-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. A four-run first inning gave the Cougars a lead they never relinquished, and closer Steve Sharpe struck out the final batter with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
The Cougars sent nine men the plate in the first frame against Kernels starter Robert Mosebach. Frank Martinez produced a run with a fielder's choice, and Steve Kleen got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Then Anthony Recker drew a walk with the bags packed to set up Isaac Omura's sacrifice fly for an early 4-0 lead.
Cougars starter Jason Ray (3-1) allowed just one run over his five innings of work to win his second straight outing. The right-hander gave up two hits, walked three, and fanned three, totaling just two earned runs allowed over his last 15 innings on the mound. He gave way to Joe Piekarz for two scoreless relief innings.
Jeff Baisley made it 5-1 with a two-out, run-scoring single in the eighth to bring home Martinez. After the Kernels grabbed two tallies -- one earned -- in the bottom half against Joe Newby, Omura delivered an RBI single in the ninth for a 6-3 game. Sharpe, who finished the previous inning, allowed one run and loaded the bases before fanning Flint Wipke to end the game and post his ninth save. Mosebach (3-2) settled down to last 7 2/3 innings but took the loss.
The Cougars (26-18) try for the sweep Tuesday at noon CDT. Trey Shields (2-5, 6.43) will face Tommy Mendoza (1-5, 5.44) for the Kernels (20-24).
