Burlington Bees News Release

Appleton, WI (May 22, 2006) - The Burlington Bees (20-22) recorded a season-high 18 hits and hit a pair of home runs and beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (18-26) 12-5 at Fox Cities Stadium this afternoon. Three players had three hits and the team scored three runs in an inning three times and RH Michael Penn (3-1) became the first pitcher to win three straight starts with six innings pitched. The Bees lead this series 2-1 and have won eight of their last nine games and 11 of their last 14.

Today's game started the same way yesterday's did, with the Rattlers matching the Bees on offense. The Bees got a run in the top of the first. Valentino Arce walked, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on a single by Mario Lisson. In the bottom of the first, Luis Valbuena singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Ron Garth. In the second, Jeremy Jirschele and Jeff Howell hit back-to-back doubles to produce the first of three runs. Antonio Sabatini added a sacrifice fly and Chris McConnell an RBI single to complete the scoring. In the bottom of the second, Mike Saunders reached on an error and the next three batters followed with singles for one run. After a popout, Valbuena and Garth each singled to drive in runs to tie the game at four.

The see-saw cycle stopped in the fifth when Miguel Vega led off with a long home run to left off of Rattlers' starter Justin Thomas to put the Bees on top 5-4. Vega leads the team with six home runs. Penn set the Rattlers down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jeff Gilmore replaced Thomas on the mound for the top of the sixth inning and gave up a one-out homer to Sabatini, the outfielders' first of the year. It was just the second time this season that the Bees have hit two home runs in the same game. The Rattlers added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Penn finished the inning to match his season and career-high. "> Only three of the five runs against him were earned and he struck out a season-high five without walking a batter. Yovany Damico finished the final three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out two for his first save of the season.

The Bees made things more comfortable for Damico by scoring three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Lisson led off the seventh with a single, Vega doubled, and Brady Everett delivered his third single of the game to drive in his first run. Everett moved to second on a wild pitch before Jirschele singled up the middle to drive in Vega. After a flyout, Everett scored on a groundout to second by Jose Duarte. Rollie Gibson replaced Gilmore in the eighth and allowed the final three runs. Arce walked for the third time in the game and scored on a double by McConnell. Lisson singled to drive in his second run of the game and has three hits in each of the last two games. After a flyout and a strikeout, Jirschele added himself to the list of three-hit Bees with a base hit to right that drove in Lisson with the Bees' final run. Jirschele, a Clintonville, WI native near Appleton, has five hits in the last two games in front of family and friends. The Bees reached double digits in runs for the first time this month and the third time this year. This was the first time the Bees have won this season when their opponent scored five or more runs in the game.

The Bees and Rattlers wrap up this series tomorrow night at 6:35 at Fox Cities Stadium. RH Chris Nicoll (2-2, 1.93) will start for the Bees against LH Paul Fagan (1-4, 5.31) for the Rattlers. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:15.
