
Bees pull away from Rattlers

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Burlington Bees blew open a close game with three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 12-5 Monday afternoon. Miguel Vega and Antonio Sabatini each homered for the Bees and Clintonville, Wisconsin native Jeremy Jirschele went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Both teams scored a single run in the first inning. Burlington took a 1-0 lead on a Mario Lisson RBI single. The Rattlers tied the game on an RBI single by Curtis Ledbetter.
The Bees and Rattlers traded three run innings in the second. Burlington (20-22) scored on an RBI double by Jeff Howell, a sacrifice fly by Sabatini, and an RBI single by Chris McConnell. Wisconsin (18-26) had six hits -- all singles -- in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits by Eddy Hernandez, Luis Valbuena, and Ron Garth. Both teams sent nine men to the plate and left the bases loaded in the third.
Burlington jumped back in front on a lead off homer by Vega off Justin Thomas in the fifth. Sabatini homered with one out in the sixth inning off Jeff Gilmore to put the Bees in front 6-4.
The Rattlers scraped an unearned run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI grounder by Casey Craig.
But, the Bees scored three times in the seventh and three more times in the eighth to go up 12-5. Back-to-back RBI singles by Brady Everett and Jirschele and an RBI grounder by Jose Duarte accounted for the seventh inning runs for the Bees. In the eighth, it was an RBI double by McConnell, and RBI singles by Lisson and Jirschele.
Yovany Damico allowed one hit over the final three innings for his first save.
The final game of the four game series is Tuesday night. Paul Fagan (1-4, 5.31 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Chris Nicoll (2-2, 1.93 ERA) gets the ball for the Bees. Game time on a "Bang for your Buck" Night at Fox Cities Stadium is 6:35pm.
