Swing sticks come to life in win

Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities rolled to the victory with stellar starting pitching and a lively offensive attack Monday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, downing the Clinton LumberKings, 10-5. The high-octane attack recorded seven runs on 10 hits between the fourth and fifth innings, chasing Clinton's Zach Phillips from the game while seizing control of the contest.

Quad Cities (18-24) avoids their longest losing streak of the season with the win, snapping a three-game skid. The much-needed victory comes on the heels of a tough stretch for the Swing that had seen a 2-6 record and four rainouts over the previous 11 days. After winning the first two games of the series, Clinton fell to 15-29 with the loss.

Cory Meacham (3-2) set the tone for Quad Cities, turning in another strong performance on the mound. The righthander from Deatsville, Alabama allowed one run on six hits in seven innings of work, shutting down the LumberKings offense in the longest outing of his career. Through three starts since returning from the DL on May 5, Meacham has allowed only one run in 17 innings of work, going 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA over that span.

In the second inning, Bryan Anderson got the scoring started with nobody out when he sent a groundball single up the middle. He advanced to second on a passed ball charged to Alberto Martinez, but the struggles did not end there for the LumberKings' catcher. Anderson took off again on a ball in the dirt, and when the backstop's throw to third bounced into left field he was able to trot home. Martinez was charged with another passed ball and a throwing error on the play, spotting the Swing a 1-0 lead.

With the score tied 1-1, Quad Cities picked up the bats in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Randy Roth hammered a line drive inside of third base for a double. His first extra-base hit since May 10 sparked a rally that saw five consecutive base knocks and led to four runs in the frame. Anderson would follow with an RBI double before A.J. Van Slyke, Adam Rodgers, and Luis Cotto chipped in with successive singles of their own to stake Quad Cities to a 5-1 advantage.

In the fifth, they would blow the game wide open. Daniel Nelson led off with a single, extending his hitting streak to nine games. A Colby Rasmus infield single was followed by another hit from Roth, scoring Nelson for the slugger 's first RBI in 12 days. Anderson's single loaded the bases, chasing starter Zach Phillips from the game. The new pitcher was former Quad City River Bandits hurler Gerry Oakes, who quickly induced a 5-2-3 double play to momentarily hold the Swing offense. But with two outs a wild pitch allowed Roth to speed home, and a double from A.J. Van Slyke scored Anderson for the commanding 8-1 lead.

The Swing extended the lead to 10-1 on a two-run double by Anderson in the seventh, giving him a perfect 4-for-4 night that included two doubles, three runs, and three driven in. The 19-year-old catcher from Simi Valley California has gone 8-for-13 this series with four doubles and a home run in three games, raising his batting average to a team-high .333.

He was not the only Swing slugger to have a big game. Roth and Van Slyke each finished with 3-for-4 nights, combining for three doubles, four runs scored, and two RBI. As a team, the Swing clubbed 14 hits in 37 at-bats (.378).

The only blemish for Quad Cities was the eighth inning, which saw the end of an impressive streak from righthanded reliever Trey Hearne. Since making a spot start on May 2, the product of Texas A&M Corpus Christi ran his streak of consecutive batters retired to 22 before Jose Vallejo singled through the left side of the infield with one out. The stretch covered five games and 7.2 innings, but was snapped in what turned into a four-run frame that brought the LumberKings to within 10-5.

Zach Phillips (1-3) suffered the loss for Clinton after getting hammered for eight runs - seven earned - on 11 hits in four innings of work. The southpaw from Sacramento, California faced four batters in the fifth without recording an out.
