Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - The Lansing Lugnuts survived a ninth-inning rally from the South Bend Silver Hawks in order to take a 4-3 win at Coveleski Stadium Wednesday night. The victory completed a series sweep for the Lugnuts, who have now won six straight games and 11-of-12 from South Bend this year.
Lansing led 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth when Ramon Ramirez laced a two-run single into right field that pulled the Hawks within one run and no men out. However reliever Edgar Estanga was able to nail down the save by striking out Matt Oxendine and inducing a fielder's choice from Evan Frey for the first two outs. Frey was then thrown out at second base on a stolen base attempt by C.J. Ebarb to end the game.
For the first time in the set, the Lugnuts were able to score runs early in a game, as they plated one in the second and two in the third off of highly touted South Bend pitcher Jarrod Parker.
Moises Sierra singled and scored on a Wes Stone base knock to put Lansing ahead 1-0.
Then in the third, Raul Barron laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Parker's throw to first ended up in the right field corner. The error allowed Justin Jackson to score and Barron to move to third base. Ebarb's sacrifice fly added to the lead at 3-0.
Lansing put an insurance run up in the eighth that proved to be the game-winner. Eric Eiland hammered a double to center field that plated Stone to make it 4-1.
Marc Rzepczynski (2-1) was solid for Lansing en route to his second straight win. He gave up just one run, which came in the fifth, on five hits in six frames of work.
Parker (4-3) took the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, in three innings. It was his first start in two weeks.
Estanga's save was his fifth of the season.
Lansing's pitching staff held the Silver Hawks to just six runs in the entire series.
Lansing (34-25) will return home Thursday night to host the Fort Wayne Wizards (31-28) in the opener of a four-game series at Oldsmobile Park. Brad Mills (4-2, 2.62) will take the mound for Lansing. He is expected to be opposed by Fort Wayne's Jeremy Hefner (3-3, 3.96).
It will also be a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday at Oldsmobile Park, with beer and soda on-sale for just $2. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
