Cougars Fall, Split with Kernels

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - For the second time in their four-game series in Cedar Rapids, the Kane County Cougars suffered a walk-off defeat, losing to the Kernels on Wednesday night, 4-3, in front of 1,540 at Veteran Memorial Stadium. The Cougars have now played 27 consecutive games that have been decided by four runs or less, and each of the last eight has been by two runs or less.
Cougars starter Craig Italiano, who leads all of the minor leagues in ERA, posted his second quality start of the season, both of which have been against the Kernels. Greg Dowling gave him a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with a solo homer, but the Kernels tied the score in the bottom half. That run ended Italiano's streak of consecutive scoreless innings at 17 1/3, and it was the first earned run against him since April 12, a span of 43 2/3 innings.
The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the sixth off Michael Davitt with Larry Cobb's sacrifice fly, and the Kernels took a 3-2 advantage with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth off Italiano, who gave up three runs -- one earned -- on three hits, walked three and fanned three over six frames. Matt Ray's RBI single in the seventh made it 3-3, and the score remained until Nick Walters (1-2) allowed a game-winning single to Jeremy Moore in the last of the ninth, scoring Julio Perez on a close play at the plate.
The Cougars (35-23) return home to Elfstrom Stadium for a four-game series against the playoff-contending Beloit Snappers (31-28) that begins Thursday night at 6:30 CT. Jamie Richmond (5-3, 3.43) will oppose Michael McCardell (1-1, 3.38).
