Lugnuts Land Six in Fifth Inning, Handle Loons 7-2

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (2-2) tallied six runs in the bottom of the fifth to distance themselves past the Great Lakes Loons (2-2) 7-2 on a sunny 66-degree and clear Tuesday night at Jackson ® Field.

The six runs were the most by a Midwest League team in an inning through the first four games.

A single and walk along with a wild pitch, put two in scoring position. A Dereck Salom groundout plated the first run. After gaining out the second out, Brandon Neeck was replaced by Joel Ibarra. The next five Lugnuts reached base safely. Brayan Buelvas singled home a run, Henry Bolte singled, and a passed ball put another two in scoring position.

Will Simpson, the next batter, appeared to walk on five pitches. But no one on the field seemed to notice, with the next pitch being slapped by Simpson into left field, tacking on two runs. A second walk put on two runners for Jonny Butler, which he cleared. The inning ended when he was thrown out trying to reach third base.

Great Lakes managed two runs, a Kyle Nevin RBI double in the first inning, and a Nevin RBI single in the ninth. The ninth inning ended the same way two additional half innings did for the Loons offense, a double play.

Christian Romero went 2.2 innings in his first start with Great Lakes. All eight outs were induced groundballs.

Rounding Things Out

Of the Loons' 20 hits in 2024, 10 have come with a two-strike count.
