Louisville Bats News Release
BATS LOOK TO AVOID SWEEP: The Louisville Bats and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders play the final game of a three-game series Thursday night. The RailRiders defeated the Bats for the second straight night, winning 3-1 Wednesday. The Bats recorded a season-low 2 hits in the loss, and scored on D.J. Peterson 's RBI single in the fourth that scored Rosell Herrera . Scranton pitching has kept Louisville to just one run over the past 18 innings. With the loss, the Bats fall to 2-11-2 in series this season, last winning a series from April 23-25 vs. Columbus.
AGAINST SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE: The Bats and RailRiders meet for the first time this season, a three-game series at Louisville Slugger Field. Last season, Louisville went 2-4 against Scranton, dropping two separate three-game series. LOU was outscored in those matchups 33-28. The Bats last won the season series against the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees in 2012, when LOU went 6-2 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, including a four-game sweep at Louisville Slugger Field.
WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY: After last night's loss, the Bats are 7-22 in May this season, including dropping a season-high 6 games to start the month. Last night's loss tied the franchise record for most losses in a month (22), done 3 times and most recently by the 1993 Redbirds in August. If Louisville drops Thursday's series finale to Scranton, LOU will set a new franchise record for most losses in a calendar month with 23.
PITCHING STILL IN CONTROL: Louisville pitching has combined to walk just 6 batters in its last 7 games, spanning 62.0 innings. Over the past week of games, Zach Neal, Rafael De Paula, Domingo Tapia, Anthony DeSclafani, Kyle Crockett, Evan Mitchell, Kevin Quackenbush, Justin Nicolino, Jose Lopez, Jimmy Herget, Brandon Finnegan and Cody Reed have combined for 6 walks and 54 strikeouts, averaging less than a walk per game. Despite the 9 strikeouts per walk, the Bats are just 2-5 in their last 7 games.
BATS ADD RAINEY; SELSKY TO DL: On Wednesday the Bats added right-hander Tanner Rainey to their roster (optioned by Cincinnati), and placed Steve Selsky on the disabled list with a right elbow contusion. Rainey led the International League in batting average against (.109; 6-55) and strikeout-per-9-innings ratio (15.8) at the time of his promotion the Majors on May 23.
GAME #50: The Bats gear up to play their 50th game of the season tonight. Louisville needs a win tonight to match its 17-33 record it posted after 50 games last season. In 2016, the Bats owned a 28-22 record at the 50-game point, going on a 5-game winning streak to get to that point.
HOMEBODIES: The Bats have played in 28 games at Louisville Slugger Field this season, tied for most in the IL with Durham. The Bats have pitched much better at home, averaging 4.2 runs given up per game at home, and 5.2 runs given up per game on the road, with a 3.60 ERA at home and 4.91 ERA on the road. The offense has been fairly even, averaging 3.4 runs at LSF and 3.6 runs on the road, with the batting averages sitting at .246 and .241, respectively.
IT DIDN'T RAIN, BUT IT DID HALE: Louisville's offense was stifled by Scranton pitching for the second straight night, held to only one run on 2 hits a night after being shut out for the second time this season. Scranton starting pitcher David Hale, along with relievers Raynel Espinal and Joe Harvey, combined to two-hit the Bats. The 2 hits were the fewest the Bats have registered as a team since August 16, 2016, when Louisville recorded just 2 hits in a 5-0 loss at Indianapolis.
QRS: Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani tossed a quality start in his rehab outing yesterday, going 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 HR, BB, 2 K on 95 pitches, 59 strikes. In total, rehabbers for Louisville this season are 0-3 with an 8.38 ERA (18er/19.1ip), with the Bats going 1-6 when a rehabber makes an appearance.
