From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Gwinnett used a seven-run second inning to bury the Indians, 11-4, Wednesday night at The Vic. The Tribe pitching staff combined to walk 11 batters in addition to 12 hits allowed, giving the visitors plenty of opportunities to score. The Stripers capitalized in the second with a three-run homer by Austin Riley that made it 6-0. Carlos Franco tripled and scored on a wild pitch by Casey Sadler that gave Gwinnett its seventh tally. Indy chipped away with one in the second and two more in the fourth thanks to back-to-back home runs by Erich Weiss and Pablo Reyes. The Tribe plated another run in the sixth on two-out RBI single by Weiss, but after a 42-minute rain delay, the Stripers scored four times in their final three trips to the plate to complete the scoring.
TOUCHED UP: Southpaw Brandon Waddell had a Triple-A debut to forget in last night's loss against Gwinnett. He recorded just five outs, surrendering five earned runs on two hits and four walks before handing over to Casey Sadler. Waddell's first eight games (seven starts) of the season were spectacular; he went 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA (9 ER/48.2 IP) and 41 strikeouts against 14 walks. In his last two starts, he's 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA (12 ER/6.2 IP) and nine walks against just two strikeouts.
GWINNETT AT THE VIC: With last night's loss the Indians sealed their fate in the head-to-head series at The Vic against Gwinnett, falling to 2-4 this season against the Stripers in the Circle City with one to play. Indy had won the series over Gwinnett at The Vic five straight seasons, including a four-game sweep in 2013. The two teams split their four-game sets at The Vic in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The only year Gwinnett won more than lost at The Vic came in its inaugural season in 2009, when they took three of four from the Tribe.
COMMON DENOMINATOR, CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK: Three Indians have 30 or more hits this month. Kevin Newman leads the way with 38 hits, Christopher Bostick has 35 and Jordan Luplow has piled up 31. Last year, there were two different months where the Tribe had three players with 30-plus hits in the same month, doing so in May and August. Bostick contributed to each of those. In May 2017, Austin Meadows (33), Jason Rogers (32) and Bostick (30) accomplished the feat. Then in August, Bostick (33), Edwin Espinal (31) and Newman (30) did so.
BACK-TO-BACK HOMERS: Erich Weiss and Pablo Reyes homered in consecutive at-bats with two outs in the fourth against left-hander Michael Mader last night, marking the first back-to-back homers hit by the Tribe in 2018. Last year Indy went back-to-back four times, and Weiss had a role in the two most recent occurrences, both at Victory Field. He followed an Eric Wood fourth-inning home run with one of his own on June 28 against Durham, and he blasted another on the heels of a Jacob Stallings dinger on Aug. 21 against Louisville.
SILVER LINING: Three Indians have found success vs. Gwinnett, despite a team average of just .241 (45-for-187) against the Stripers. Jordan Luplow is 7-for-13 (.538), Pablo Reyes has collected five hits in 12 at-bats (.417) and Jose Osuna has hit .389 (7-for-18).
TAKE TWO: The Indians have bashed 132 doubles this season, good for the top mark in the league. Toledo (106) and Syracuse (105) have both eclipsed the century mark in two-baggers this year, as well. The Tribe are averaging 2.64 doubles per game, putting them on pace for 370 doubles. The franchise record for doubles in a season is 378, set over a 166-game season in 1931. The Victory Field era record for doubles in a season is 299, accomplished in both 1998 and 2000. Indy also led the IL in doubles in 2017 with 279.
TWO MORE FOR 40: Kevin Newman is batting .365 (38-for-104) through 27 games in May. Since 2005, his current May hit total of 38 is currently tied for eighth with Gregory Polanco, who had that amount of hits for the Tribe in April 2014. The monthly hits leaderboard for Tribe players since 2005 is below:
1. Josh Bell - 43 (June 2016) T-6. Starling Marte - 39 (June 2012)
2. Alen Hanson - 42 (May 2015) T-6. Chris Duffy - 39 (June 2005)
3. Brock Holt - 41 (Aug. 2012) T-8. Kevin Newman - 38 (May 2018)
T-4. Alex Presley - 40 (May 2011) T-8. Gregory Polanco - 38 (April 2014)
T-4. Rajai Davis - 40 (May 2007) T-10. Josh Harrison - 37 (June 2013) ... five others tied with 37
.365 AVERAGE IN MAY: Newman's .365 average (38-for-104) this month is also comfortably among the top 10 highest monthly averages by a Tribe player since 2005, among players with a minimum of 75 at-bats in a single month. His .365 clip currently ranks fifth. The top 10 individual average leaderboard for a single month is below:
