Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - A ninth inning comeback fell short as the Durham Bulls dropped the series finale to the Rochester Red Wings 5-4 Thursday night at the DBAP, as the visitors completed the three-game sweep.

Anthony Banda (L, 4-3) dropped his first start with the Bulls since May 7, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.0 innings, surrendering a pair of home runs and recording five strikeouts. Banda has fanned four or more in all eight of his starts with Durham this year.

The Red Wings broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, with a solo home run by Jake Cave, his fourth of the year. Rochester added to its lead in the fifth with two runs on a home run by Taylor Featherston stretching the lead to 3-0.

In the home half of the fifth inning, Durham scored two runs on four hits highlighted by RBI from Jason Coats and Jake Bauers cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Rochester stretched its lead to 4-2 in the visitor's ninth with a blast to right field by Kennys Vargas, his eighth homer of the year and third of the series. Later in the frame, Featherston struck for an RBI single, scoring former Bull Taylor Motter and increasing the lead to three.

Kean Wong responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Coats worked his way on base with a two-out walk against Red Wings' reliever Luke Bard, but Bauers grounded out to first to end the threat and the game.

Bauers finished 2-for-5, posting his 14th multi-hit game, which leads the team. Coats drove in a run with two hits, and Michael Russell tripled and scored, notching his second two-hit performance since joining Durham on May 24.

Durham finished the month of May with a 17-13 record, dropping to 29-23 after suffering its second sweep of the season and first at home. The Bulls were swept from April 16 to 18 at Toledo.

The Bulls (29-23) welcome the Pawtucket Red Sox (24-27) for the first of three games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Adam Kolarek (4-0, 1.59) expected to start for the Bulls against William Cuevas (2-2, 4.07) for the PawSox.
