Toledo Mud Hens News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Jim Adduci and Harold Castro recorded three hit games as the Toledo Mud Hens stole the series from the Syracuse Chiefs by a score of 5-3 at NBT Bank Stadium on Thursday evening.

Prior to the game, the Chiefs (25-26) held the second highest team batting average in the international league, and the Mud Hens were not far behind in third. Toledo starter Spenser Watkins did well to slow down the hot bats of Syracuse not allowing a run through five innings.

Mike Gerber led off the game for the Mud Hens (33-19) by driving a first-pitch single into right field. He then stole second base with Christin Stewart up to bat. Stewart recorded a walk on the ensuing pitch giving the Mud Hens two on with one out. Dawel Lugo then launched a ball to deep centerfield that was caught but allowed Gerber to tag up and move to third.

Jim Adduci then roped a single into left field scoring Gerber and giving the Mud Hens an early 1-0 lead. Jason Krizan followed suit by dribbling one up the middle past the second baseman to score Stewart and increase the Toledo lead.

Spenser Watkins did not allow a hit or a run through the first two innings although he walked three Chiefs batters and struck out one but continued to shut down the second hottest offense in the international league.

In the third inning, Adduci launched his sixth home run of the season over the right field fence to give the Mud Hens a 3-0 advantage.

Edwin Espinal led off the fourth inning with a walk and Jarod Saltalamacchia then sent a single into right field to give the Hens runners on first and second with no outs. Harold Castro then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt which he reached second on a throwing error by the Syracuse catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, and Espinal scored on the play. Toledo left three runners on base in the fourth and ended the innings with a 4-0 lead.

To start out the fifth, Adduci legged out an infield single for his third hit of the game. He then stole second base to give him his sixth of the year.

Castro kept a hot night going in the sixth inning as he notched his third hit of the evening, marking his second three hit game of the campaign.

Watkins night came to an end after five strong innings allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out two batters and walking three. Watkins earned his first win in a Mud Hens jersey and his record is now 1-1.

Caleb Thielbar entered the game in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning. Syracuse was able to record a double, a home run and another double to score two runs and cut the Toledo lead to two. The Chiefs then used a sacrifice fly and a single to score another run as the Mud Hens lead dwindled to one.

Lugo responded in the top of the seventh with a one out solo shot to deep left field. This marked his second home run of the season and gave Toledo a 5-3 advantage.

Thielbar threw one inning of relief allowing three earned runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Paul Voelker came in to throw two innings and did not allow a run or a hit while walking one batter and recording three strikeouts. This was Voelker's fifth save of the campaign.

Victor Alcantara came in to close for Toledo in the ninth. Alcantara struck out all three batters he faced, earning his second save of the season.

Adduci ended the night 3-for-4 with two RBI, a home run and a stolen base. Castro ended his night at the plate 3-for-4 as well.
