Great Lakes Loons News Release

LANSING, MI - Concluding a 12-game trip, the Great Lakes Loons (21-21) scored seven runs on 11 hits to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (20-22) on Sunday at Jackson Field, 7-1. Andy Pages and Deacon Liput each homered twice, combining for five of the seven runs batted in. Lansing and the Loons used 11 combined arms in Sunday's finale. Great Lakes southpaw Alec Gamboa (W, 1-3) tossed four innings with five strikeouts, both game-highs for any individual arm. Lansing's Stevie Emanuels (L, 1-3) allowed five runs on eight hits in three innings in the Loons win. Gamboa relieved GL starter Logan Boyer, who tossed his fourth-consecutive scoreless frame on Sunday. In June, Boyer carries a 1.80 ERA along with an 0.60 WHIP in five appearances, all limited to one-inning starts.

Highlighted by Gamboa's piggyback start with Boyer, Great Lakes used four other relievers for the final four innings, allowing no runs on no hits in that stretch. Sunday's game was the return to the mound for Kevin Malisheski, striking out two batters in a perfect inning. Sunday was the first appearance for Malisheski since being placed on the Development List on June 1. The quartet between Jake Cantleberry, Malisheski, Melvin Jimenez and Jeff Belge grooved in a perfect four-inning span to retire their 12 outs consecutively, striking out six batters.

Great Lakes scored first for the 19th time of the season with two Loons longballs in the top of the third. Deacon Liput, who hadn't homered this season as of Saturday, turned around the first pitch of the third from Emanuels for his second homerun of the year, as well as in as many nights. Following a James Outman walk, Pages responded with his first homerun of the day and number 11 on the year, which tied the top of the HAC's HR list. The Lugnuts scored their lone run in the game on Gamboa in the bottom of the third, but the Loons would respond with the second homers for Liput and Pages, again in the same half-frame. The second bop for Pages was his 12th of 2021, most from any batter in the High-A Central. Justin Yurchak drove in one of two runs in the top of the seventh on his second hit of the day, giving the Loons first-baseman his seventh multi-hit outing in his last eight games. Yurchak finished with 12 hits in the Lansing stretch, a series-best by either roster. Four different Loons compiled multi-hit days in Sunday's win.

Despite seven runs scoring on 11 hits, Great Lakes finished 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Loons loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth innings, coming away with just two runs. Lansing's Bryce Nightengale allowed eight baserunners in his 1 1/3 innings, with only two reaching base on hits. On 51 pitches, Nightengale walked four batters and plunked Liput and Leonel Valera with pitches. The Lugnuts finished Sunday 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, being limited by the GL staff to just three runners reaching either second or third.

Great Lakes draws the curtain on their 12-game road trip that spanned over the last two weeks with a 5-7 overall record. What would be a difficult road trip to Dayton began with the Loons falling in their first four games to the Dragons, despite leading 7-0 on Tuesday and 5-0 Wednesday. Five of the seven road losses were decided by a run.
