MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons used heads-up base running in the fourth inning of Monday's School Kids Day game to score the eventual game-winning run and help the Loons complete a three-game sweep of the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

With the scored tied in the bottom of the fourth inning, two singles to the outfield put runners Steve Domecus and Chris Henderson on the corners. The following batter, Jesse Bosnik, hit a pop-fly to shallow left field that was caught by Bowling Green's Nick Schwaner. Domecus tagged up and bluffed running home, tricking Schwaner to throw to home plate. The throw was over the cut-off man giving Henderson the easy steal of second base. The Hot Rods catcher tried to stop Henderson with a throw to second, giving Domecus the clear path home to put the Loons up 2-1.

"The ball was way to shallow for Domecus to try and score," Loons manager John Shoemaker said after the game. "Even though he was not going home, the outfielder overthrew the cutoff man...If it had have been a low throw to the cut-off man, Henderson wouldn't have gone to second....luckily for us we executed the play...it was nice heads-up base running and we also got a break when their second baseman dropped the ball after the catcher threw it to him, so they had no chance at for a play at the plate."

Loons second baseman Casio Grider gave the Loons an early lead with his solo home run in the first inning. The home run soared out to left field with Grider swinging at the first pitch; the homer was Grider's first of the season. The Hot Rods leveled the game in the second inning when lead-off batter Robby Price knocked an RBI-single to left field.

Loons starting pitcher Red Patterson picked up his third win, limiting Hot Rod batters to one run on three hits over five innings of work. Andrew Pevsner stepped to the rubber in the sixth to make his first appearance as a Loon. He allowed two hits in two scoreless innings, collecting three strikeouts along the way. Pete Budkevics pitched the final two innings for the Loons, picking up his second save of the season.

Entering the series with the Loons, Bowling Green was tied for first in the Midwest League's eastern division and a half-game ahead. With three wins over the Hot Rods, the Loons sit in second place and could move into first place tonight with a Lansing loss.

The Loons begin a rare six-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts Tuesday, with the first three games being hosted at Dow Diamond and the final three on the road in Lansing. RHP Derek Cone (1-1, 3.77) will start for the Loons opposite a Lugnuts pitcher yet to be announced. Tuesday marks the first of six Dodgers Route of Champions Nights. Dodger great Maury Wills will be in attendance at the game to mingle with fans and sign autographs. Game time at 7:05 p.m.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fifth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
