LANSING, Mich. - The Lake County Captains (16-16) scored early and often to avoid the three game sweep as they beat the Lansing Lugnuts (19-12) on a rainy Monday night, 9-5.

A forty minute rain delay in the sixth inning put a stamp on a gloomy night for Lansing as Lake County got to starting pitcher Daniel Webb (3-2) who allowed seven runs (six earned) in five and two thirds innings of work.

Captains starter Mike Rayl (4-0) had his outing cut short when he departed after the rain delay, but pitched the necessary five innings, giving up two earned runs to earn the win.

Most of Lake County's offense came in the first three innings. The Captains scored three in the first, two in the second, and a solo home run by Alex Monsalve in the third made the score 6-1.

The Nuts attempted to rally back after the rain delay, but only managed to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Both offenses packed the statbook as the two teams combined to score in nine of the 18 frames in the game compiling a total of 27 base hits.

The Lugnuts take their talents to Midland tomorrow night as they face off against the Great Lakes Loons and begin their battle for first place. Lansing will throw right-hander Casey Lawrence (2-3, 4.30). Derek Cone (1-1, 3.77) gets the start for Lake County with the first pitch coming at 7:05 p.m.

Tickets to cheer on the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law School Stadium are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
