South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks broke out the brooms on Monday night, completing a three game series sweep of the Fort Wayne TinCaps with a 7-2 victory. The win was the team's fourth in a row and the sweep is the first of the season for South Bend.

Bradin Hagens (WP, 2-1) was going up against the TinCaps for the third time already this season, and he showed that he knew how to attack the hitters. Hagens allowed just one run over 6.0 innings, striking out four and giving up just two hits in earning his second victory of the season.

While Hagens got it done on the mound, Yazy Arbelo provided the pop at the plate. Arbelo went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, tying for the Midwest League lead with 25 RBIs this season.

The Silver Hawks took a 1-0 lead against Adys Portillo (LP, 0-5) in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back doubles by Zach Walters and Arbelo. South Bend then broke the game open in the fifth scoring five times on just two hits to chase Portillo from the game.

Ramon Castillo started the fifth inning rally with a single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Mike Freeman. A little roller up the first base line from Freeman was fielded by Portillo, but his throw home was wild with the error allowing two runs to score. In came Noah Mull (ND), who promptly threw a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 Silver Hawks lead. After a walk to Walters put runners on the corners, Arbelo came through with his second double of the game, scoring both runners to push his RBI total to 25.

Walters added his second double of the game in the seventh and scored for the third time on the night when Matt Helm laced a RBI single to right field for the Hawks final tally of the game.

The TinCaps were held to just four total hits by Hagens and relievers Mike Bolsinger (ND) and Eury De La Rosa (ND). Jake Blackwood and Wes Cunningham had RBI singles for Fort Wayne, who hit just .196 in the series.

The Silver Hawks begin a six day, eight game road trip tomorrow with doubleheaders scheduled for Tuesday in Grand Rapids, MI and Saturday in Bowling Green, KY. It gets underway with two games tomorrow night as the Hawks battle the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) at Fifth Third Ballpark at 6:05 PM Eastern Time. RHP J.R. Bradley (0-5, 5.61 ERA) and LHP Dan Taylor (2-1, 0.63 ERA) are expected to start for South Bend, while LHP Antonio Cruz (0-3, 3.07 ERA) is West Michigan's game one starter and game two is still to be announced. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
