Dayton Dragons News Release

Comstock Park, Mich.-The West Michigan Whitecaps battled back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Monday night, completing a sweep of the three-game series.

Luis Castillo's two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie and the Whitecaps withstood several Dragons comeback bids to earn their fifth straight victory and hand the Dragons their eighth loss in the last nine games.

Dayton led 3-0 after one-half inning. Dominic D'Anna's two-run home run with one out in the first gave the Dragons the lead. It was D'Anna's second homer of the year. Later in the same inning, Donald Lutz delivered a two-out, RBI single to score David Vidal from second base to make it a three-run inning.

West Michigan answered with one run in the bottom of the first and one more in the second to make it 3-2. They took advantage of an error that led to two unearned runs in the fourth to take the lead, and added one more in the fifth to jump ahead 5-3.

D'Anna started the Dragons half of the seventh with a single to right and went to second on a passed ball. Yorman Rodriguez walked as D'Anna took third on a wild pitch. Rodriguez stole second and the Dragons had two men in scoring position with no one out. But Vidal struck out and Lutz popped out for the second out. Another wild pitch brought in D'Anna to make it 5-4 and moved Rodriguez to third. But Juan Duran popped out to short to end the inning.

The Dragons got the tying run to second in the ninth inning with two outs, but Whitecaps closer Bruce Rondon struck out Vidal to end the game.

The Dragons stranded 10 runners, going 1 for 10 with men in scoring position.

Dayton (15-17) returns home on Tuesday to battle the Lake County Captains (16-16) at Fifth Third Field in a battle of the two Midwest League teams from Ohio and the two Ohio parent clubs (Reds and Indians). Daniel Corcino (4-2, 3.94), who has won his last four starts, will pitch for the Dragons. Kyle Blair (2-0, 3.38) will start for Lake County.

Notes: The game was delayed for 55 minutes by rain in the bottom of the first inning...Entering Monday's games, Dayton's Billy Hamilton continued to lead all of professional baseball in stolen bases with 22, two more than Andrew Means of the Reds' affiliate in Bakersfield. Means played for the Dragons in 2009-'10. Hamilton picked up one steal in Monday's game.
