Snappers avoid sweep, edge Kernels 5-4

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Beloit Snappers edged the Kernels 5-4 in 10 innings at Perfect Game Field on Monday afternoon. Beloit led 4-0 after six innings, the Kernels battled back with four runs in the 7th inning, but Beloit scored a run in the 10th inning to win the game.

Beloit's leadoff hitter Daniel Santana began the ballgame with an opposite field home run to left field against Kernel starter Heath Nichols to give the Snappers a 1-0 lead. The Snappers added a run in the 3rd inning. Nate Roberts singled with one out. He stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch by Nichols. Roberts scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Gonzalez to give the Snappers a 2-0 lead.

Beloit extended the lead with a single run in the 4th inning. Lance Ray led off the inning with a single to center field. He came home on a two out RBI single by Wang-Wei Lin, and the Snappers led 3-0. In the 6th inning Ray singled with one out, reached second base on an error by Kernels first baseman Brandon Decker, and scored on a RBI double by Matt Parker. This gave the Snappers a 4-0 lead.

The Kernels fought back with four runs on five hits in the 7th inning as nine batters came to the plate. David Harris led off with a single. After Decker grounded out, Jeremy Cruz singled to put runners at the corners. On a potential double play ball off the bat of Carlos Ramirez, Beloit's shortstop Daniel Santana booted the ball. All runners were safe, and Harris scored to make the score 4-1.

The next three hitters all reached with singles. Ricky Alvarez's singled to left. An error by Snapper left fielder Nate Roberts allowed Jeremy Cruz to score and made the score 4-2. Dan Eichelberger then singled to load the bases, and Beloit starter Adrian Salcedo exited the game.

The left handed Clinton Dempster entered and gave up a single to Jean Almanzar. The single plated Ramirez, making the score 4-3. Then, Drew Heid's sacrifice fly to left field scored Alvarez and tied the game. Salcedo went six innings for Beloit and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out four and walked one. Nichols started for the Kernels and went six innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out five and walking none. Donn Roach threw three innings for the Kernels. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking none.

The game stayed tied 4-4 until the 10th inning when Beloit plated one run against Kernel reliever Kevin Johnson. Andy Leer led off the innings with a single. He was bunted to second base by Nate Roberts. A single by Michael Gonzales sent Leer to 3rd base. Leer then scored on a RBI groundout to second base. This gave the Snappers a 5-4 lead. Beloit closer Matt Hauser came on the bottom of the 10th to pick up his fifth save. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out one and walking one. Dempster (2-2) went 2.2 innings out of the bullpen for Beloit and picked up the win. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out one and walking none. Kevin Johnson (1-1) took the loss after going one inning and allowing one run on two hits. David Harris led the offense by going 3-5 with one run scored. Ricky Alvarez went 2-4.

The Kernels will be on the road for the next three nights at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium taking on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Appleton. Tuesday night's ballgame begins at 6:35 p.m. The Kernels return home on Tuesday, May 17 at 6:35 p.m. to open up a three-game series versus Kane County.
