Great Lakes Loons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio - The Loons surrendered four runs in the eighth inning as the Lake County Captains pulled away for a 6-0 win on Friday night and secured the series over Great Lakes at Classic Park.
The Loons fell for the second night in a row and fourth time overall to Lake County in five games this season. The loss also drops the Loons to two games below .500 for the first time this season. Great Lakes has failed to score a run a Midwest League-leading six times this season.
Lake County seized the lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Yu-Cheng Chang that scored speedster Greg Allen. Chang struck again in the fifth against Loons' starter Brock Stewart with a solo home run to right field. The 19-year-old from Taiwan has shredded the Loons in the first two games of the series to the tune of six hits, four runs, a home run and four RBI.
The Loons trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth when Lake County pulled away for good. Lefty reliever Jose Molina, pitching on consecutive nights, retired his first batter faced before allowing three straight hits, the last of which plated a run to give Lake County a 3-0 lead.
Yeuri Gonzalez entered out of the bullpen and issued three straight walks, which brought two additional runs in to make the score 5-0 Lake County. A sacrifice fly ran the lead out to 6-0 before the Loons closed the door in the frame.
Brock Stewart (1-2) took the loss for the Loons (12-14) with six innings pitched and two runs allowed on eight hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
Left-handed starter Anderson Polanco (2-3) took the win with five shutouts innings in which he allowed three hits and two walks with six punchouts.
Great Lakes will fight to avoid the sweep on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. from Classic Park. The Loons have not been swept in 2015, while the Captains have yet to win three consecutive.
Grant Holmes (1-0, 4.57) will start for the Loons, while the Captains counter with lefty Justus Sheffield (2-1, 3.63). Coverage starts at 6 p.m. on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond on Monday, May 11 for a 7:05 p.m. showdown with the Dayton Dragons.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
