Kane County Cougars News Release

CLINTON, Iowa- The struggles to drive in runs continued for the Kane County Cougars (11-17) as they dropped the series opener to the Clinton LumberKings (12-16) at Ashford University Field 4-1 Thursday evening. The Cougars have tallied a total of three runs over the past four games.

Being the first to break a scoreless tie in the second inning, the Cougars saw their first lead since Monday on a bloop RBI double from Stryker Trahan. The Cougars collected a total of seven hits (three more than the LumberKings), but couldn't find the scoreboard again the rest of the night.

Clinton tied the score in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Kristian Brito hit a sacrifice fly to right field knotting up the score 1-1. The game-tying run was the first earned run allowed by Ethan Elias (3-1) through 15.1 innings to begin 2015. Elias suffered the loss after five innings of three-run baseball.

The LumberKings took their first lead of the day capitalizing on a Cougar error. With runners at first and second, Clinton called for a double steal in the fifth. Attempting to retire the lead runner at third, Trahan's throw ended up in left field allowing both runners to score. Clinton tacked on another run in the seventh for a 4-1 lead.

Tyler Herb (1-1) tossed his best outing of the season with a quality start of six and two-third innings of one-run baseball. Kody Kerski (3) threw a scoreless ninth for the save.

The Cougars and LumberKings continue this series on Friday in Clinton. Brad Keller (0-3, 2.48) looks for his first win of the season against Clinton's left-hander Patrick Peterson (4-1, 1.01). First pitch from Ashford University Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
