Loons Fall to Kernels, 8-3

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons (9-12, 43-48) missed their chance at recording their longest winning streak of the season Friday night at Dow Diamond, losing to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (8-13, 40-51) by the score of 8-3 in front of 4,464 fans. The loss makes the Loons 0-7 when trying to record their fourth win in a row, and 1-3 when trying to sweep a series. Despite the loss, the Loons won the series 2-1.

"We were fortunate enough to win the first two games against Cedar Rapids," Loons manager John Shoemaker said. "They've got a pretty good ball club. They can swing some bats. We took advantage of some of their pitching miscues in the first couple games, but today we didn't really have a lot going on...[Being] down eight to nothing is kind of hard to come back from."

The Kernels got on the board in the third with a single from Eric Stamets. Scoring on the play was Drew Martinez, who reached base on Ralston Cash's second walk of the ball game and went to second on a sac-bunt. Cash proceeded to allow six of his final eight batters to reach base, five of which on hits.

Cash took the loss, his sixth in eight starts for the Loons, finishing with three strikeouts and three walks. The Georgia-native allowed four runs on five hits across 3.1 innings of work. Joel Lima recorded two quick outs, but then ran into trouble in the following frame, where the Kernels batted around for four runs on three hits.

The Loons generated three runs in the sixth inning, but the Kernels eight-run advantage was too much for the Loons to overcome. Scoring for the Loons in the inning was Jesus Arredondo, O'Koyea Dickson and Scott Schebler. Pratt Maynard hit a single to score Schebler, who had a two-run double to be in scoring position.

Jose Dominguez and Matt Shelton each logged two scoreless innings to close out duties on the mound for the Loons. Kernels reliever Shane Riedie earned his first win for 3.1 innings of work. His final inning was the Loons three-run burst.

The Great Lakes Loons will begin a new three-game series Saturday at Dow Diamond with the Quad Cities River Bandits (12-9), the Single-A affiliate of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Starting for the Loons will be RHP Duke von Schamann (1-0, 1.76) against the Bandits LHP Dali Villanueva (5-4, 3.28). During the game, fans will enjoy a special appearance by Reggy the Purple Party Dude, while a Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning, will follow.
