Zeller's Knuckleball Baffles Dragons, 8-1

Peoria, Ill.-The Peoria Chiefs scored six runs in the first inning and knuckleballer Joe Zeller tossed six no-hit innings as the Chiefs defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-1 on Friday night. Peoria took two-out-of-three in the series.

Zeller (1-2), in only his third Midwest League start, baffled Dragons hitters over his six innings of work. Only two men reached base against him, one on a hit batsman and the other on an error. He walked no one and struck out four and left the game with the no-hitter in place. The Dragons first hit of the night was a seventh inning double by Sean Buckley. They would add only one more, on an eighth inning double by Yovan Gonzalez.

Dayton starting pitcher Jacob Johnson (1-2) endured a rough night. He worked one inning and allowed six hits and six runs while walking one and striking out one. Reliever Cole Green entered the game to start the second inning and pitched well. He worked four innings, allowing one hit and one run with four walks and one strikeout. Lucas O'Rear started the sixth and pitched two innings, allowing two hits and one run with no walks and a strikeout. El'Hajj Muhammad pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one walk and striking out two.

The Dragons only run came in the eighth. Gonzalez doubled to start the inning, went to third on a ground out, and scored on Jefry Sierra's ground out to shortstop.

Peoria's first inning featured a two-run double by Paul Hoilman, a two-run single by Wes Darvill, a run-scoring double by Chadd Krist, and an RBI single by Pin-Chieh Chen. All six runs came with one out. Krist added a homer in the seventh, the first of his professional career.

The Dragons (8-13) play in Burlington, Iowa against the Burlington Bees on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) in the first game of a three-game series. James Allen (6-3, 3.58) will start for the Dragons against Burlington's Chris Lamb (0-0, 4.15). The next home game is Wednesday when the Dragons host Clinton at Fifth Third Field.
