River Bandits Shut out in Series Finale at Lansing, 4-0

A night after the Quad Cities offense racked up 15 runs on 14 hits in a 15-3 rout, the River Bandits could not solve Lansing pitching, and were shut out in the rubber match and season series finale, in a 4-0 loss at Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing, Michigan.

Both team's starters were in top form, with neither offense breaking onto the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning. Lansing designated hitter K.C. Hobson narrowly missed a home run to left field, but then drove a pitch from left-hander Kyle Hald (4-5) over the right field wall to give the Lugnuts a 1-0 advantage. First baseman Kevin Patterson then singled and advanced on a wild pitch, and came around to score on an RBI single to right field by Shane Opitz to make it a 2-0 game.

Despite being notched with the loss, Hald threw six innings, allowing just the two earned runs, on six base hits, while striking out seven. For the second consecutive night, Quad Cities' starting pitcher did not walk a batter.

Quad Cities (47-43 overall, 12-9 second half) managed just seven base hits in the loss, only one of the extra base variety - a leadoff double by Anthony Garcia in the top of the ninth inning. The Quad Cities left fielder went 4-for-4 in the loss, raising his average to .307 on the year. He went 8-for-13 (.615) in the series, including two home runs, four runs and five runs batted in.

Lansing (59-31, 12-9) entered play Friday leading the Midwest League in earned run average, and right-hander Blake McFarland helped protect that right, throwing four shut out innings, and Tyler Ybarra (3-2) tossed three scoreless frames in relief, to pick up the win. Right-hander Brandon Berl pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, to pick up his first save of the season.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Lansing added two insurance runs against Quad Cities' closer, Heath Wyatt. Kenny Wilson led off with a single, and then stole second - his 31st stolen base of the season. Second baseman Andy Fermin singled to left field, and Wilson beat the throw to the plate, adding an insurance run to the Lansing lead. Patterson then singled up the middle, and Luis Mateo made a play on the ball, but could not record an out - allowing Fermin to score, and make it 4-0 in favor of Lansing.

The River Bandits offense went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, and put a runner on third base only once - in the top of the fifth inning - and that came with two outs in the frame. Of the River Bandits' seven hits as a team, Garcia accounted for four.

Quad Cities begins a three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Dail Villanueva (5-4) is scheduled to start for Quad Cities and right-hander Duke Von Schamann (1-0) will start for Great Lakes.
