Kernels rally falls short; Great Lakes wins, 7-6

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Kernels rallied in the 9th inning but fell a run short, losing to the Great Lakes Loons 7-6. The Kernels scored twice in the final inning and loaded the bases, but a slick play by Loons third baseman Jesse Bosnik halted the rally. With two outs and the tying run at 3rd base, Bosnik went to his left, gloved a shot off the bat of Eric Stamets, and gunned to 1st base to get Stamets by a step to end the game.

Great Lakes entered the 9th inning with a 7-4 lead and closer Yimi Garcia on the mound. Andy Workman led off with a single, and with one out Garcia walked both Zach Wright and Abel Baker to load the bases. The Loons brought on left hander Mike Thomas out of the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Frazier Hall. Hall then launched a ball to deep right center, but it was tracked down by Loons centerfielder James Baldwin for the second out in the inning. Then sacrifice fly scored Workman to cut the Loons lead to 7-5. Thomas then walked Drew Martinez to reload the bases. Kevin Moesquit then reached on an infield single to score Wright and trim the deficit to 7-6. Then on a 3-2 pitch, Bosnik's play at 3rd base retired Stamets and ended the game.

The Kernels drew 11 walks on the evening, but went 2-12 with runners in scoring position as they left 14 runners on base. Zach Borenstein gave the Kernels an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning with a double to score both Eric Stamets and Alex Yarbrough. Borenstein's 8th double of the season was shot the opposite-way into the left-field corner.

Great Lakes cut the Kernels lead in half in the bottom of the 1st inning without the use of a hit. Darnell Sweeney led off the inning with a walk. He then stole 2nd base and went to 3rd base on a throwing error by Kernels catcher Abel Baker before coming home on a RBI groundout by Joe Winker, trimming the Kernels lead to 2-1.

The Loons took a 3-2 lead in the 2nd inning. Jesse Bosnik tripled to deep center and scored on a RBI single by Jan Vazquez. With runners at the corners James Baldwin stole 2nd base, but Abel Baker's throw went into center field to allow Vazquez to score from 3rd base and give Great Lakes the lead.

Cedar Rapids took a 4-3 lead in the 5th inning. Eric Stamets singled and quickly came home on Alex Yarbrough's RBI triple into the right field corner. Andy Workman then brought Yarbrough to the plate with a RBI sacrifice fly to right.

The lead was short-lived as the Loons tallied three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, taking a 6-4 lead. Darnell Sweeney singled and Pedro Guerrero doubled to put two men on. Joe Winker's RBI sacrifice fly scored Sweeney to tie the game. Then, O'Koyea Dickson hit a towering 2-run home run that just cleared the wall in left field to put the Loons in front by two runs.

Great Lakes added a run in the 7th inning, pushing the Loons lead to 7-4. James Baldwin led off with a triple and came to the plate on a RBI single by Darnell Sweeney.

Mike Johnson (4-4) started for the Kernels and took the loss. He went five innings and allowed six runs (four earned) while striking out four and walking one. Joe Melioris and Aaron Meade pitched scoreless frames while Brandon Lodge allowed one run over one inning.

The Loons used six pitchers to secure the victory. Raydell Sanchez (3-4) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Juan Rodrigez threw 1.1 scoreless innings. Danny Coulombe added 0.2 inning with no runs. Steven Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Yimi Garcia allowed two runs over 0.1 inning. Mike Thomas got the final two outs, picking up his 5th save.

The Kernels conclude the series at Dow Diamond vs. Great Lakes on Friday evening at 6:05 p.m. (7:05 eastern). The team returns home on July 18 vs. Ft. Wayne.
