Chiefs Win 8-1 Friday

Peoria, IL - - The Peoria Chiefs won the rubber match of a three-game set against the Dayton Dragons 8-1 Friday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The win puts Peoria at 43-47 on the season with a second half record of 8-13.
The Chiefs gave Joe Zeller plenty of run support early in the ballgame. Zeke DeVoss led off the first inning against Jacob Johnson with a walk and went to second on a Taiwan Easterling ground ball single. Dustin Geiger struck out and Paul Hoilman came to the plate. With Hoilman up, Johnson spun and threw his pickoff attempt into centerfield and DeVoss moved to third and Easterling to second. On an 0-1 pitch, Hoilman drove a double into centerfield to bring home DeVoss and Easterling to make the score 2-0. Javier Baez singled to left putting Hoilman at third. Baez stole second and Wes Darvill singled into center bringing in two more runs for the Chiefs and putting them up 4-0. With Darvill on second and only one out, Chadd Krist hit a double into left center to plate Darvill and Peoria added to their lead, making it 5-0. Oliver Zapata hit a routine grounder to Juan Perez, but Perez was unable to make the play and Krist went to third putting runners on the corners. Pin-Chieh Chen knocked in Krist with a base hit to left to increase the lead to 6-0.
Peoria added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally. Reliever Cole Green walked Chen with two outs and on a 3-2 offering, DeVoss doubled off the right field wall to bring home Chen and give the Chiefs a 7-0 advantage.
Joe Zeller left after pitching six innings and he did not allow a hit. In the top of the seventh, Jeff Antigua entered and after retiring the first batter, he allowed a double, which was just fair down the left field line, to Sean Buckley to end the no-hit bid.
In the bottom of the seventh Krist padded Peoria's lead with a one-out homer into the left field berm to put the Chiefs up 8-0. The home run was the first of his professional career.
The Dragons got on the board against reliever Luis Liria in the top of the eighth. Yovan Gonzalez doubled into right center to lead off the inning and moved to third on a ground ball by Juan Silva. Jefry Sierra bounced a slow grounder up the middle but Baez barehanded the ball and fired to first for an out, but Gonzalez was able to come home and make the score 8-1.
Zeller (1-2) pitched six no-hit innings as he struck out four and hit one batter. In one inning of work, Antigua allowed one hit and struck out two. Liria pitched the final two innings of the game and he gave up one run on one hit and two walks and he struck out a batter.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Joe Zeller (RHP) - In Zeller's third start for the Chiefs, he was brilliant while picking up his first win of 2012. In six innings, he allowed no hits and just one hit batsman while striking out four, which is tied for a season high. The only other runner he allowed reached on an error in the fourth inning.
