Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Brandon Trinkwon notched four hits and Jonathan Martinez continued his impressive pitching Wednesday night in a 5-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Martinez (6-5) - selected as the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week on Monday - continued his run of solid pitching. The Venezuelan right hander allowed a first-inning run, then shut out the Silver Hawks for five more frames to collect the win. Martinez allowed five hits and struck out five.
Trailing 1-0, the Loons took the lead in the fourth off South Bend starter Sean Furney. Paul Hoenecke's double tied the score. Later with two outs, Joey Curletta singled up the middle to score Hoenecke with the go-ahead run.
One inning later, the Loons strung together four straight hits and scored three more times to extend the lead to 5-1. Trinkwon tripled to bring in Jesmuel Valentin. Later Josmar Cordero blasted a two-run home run for his fifth long ball of the season.
Ralston Cash, Matt Campbell and Victor Araujo threw one scoreless relief inning each to finish out the game.
Trinkwon's four-hit performance was the seventh such game of the year for the Loons. He finished a home run shy of the cycle.
All five Loons runs were charged to Furney (2-4), who recorded the loss.
The Loons (4-2, 38-38) and Silver Hawks (2-4, 42-33) conclude their three-game series Thursday night at 7:05pm. Right-handed pitcher Zachary Bird (4-8, 4.13 ERA) is likely to start for the Loons against South Bend righty John Omahen (2-2, 4.30). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Great Lakes Loons are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
