Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs moved into first place in the Western Division with a 6-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night, completing a three-game sweep for their fifth straight victory. The Chiefs record is 5-1 in the second half and 42-33 overall.
For the first time in the series, the Chiefs scored first, with two runs in the first inning against Kernels starter Aaron Slegers. Vaughn Bryan led off with a hustle triple to left and scored when CJ McElroy Jr. hit a chopper over the drawn-in shortstop. McElroy moved to third on a stolen base and a fly out and Justin Ringo walked. McElroy scored when Mason Katz hit a ground ball to second and the Kernels couldn't complete a double play.
Cedar Rapids got a run back in the third against Chiefs starter Alex Reyes. Jon Murphy doubled and Ryan Walker singled to put runners at the corners. After Walker was thrown out trying to steal second, Murphy came in on a ground out by JD Williams to cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1.
The Chiefs got the run right back in the bottom of the third inning. Ringo led off with a line-drive single past the pitcher and Steve Bean walked. A fly out put runners on the corners and Ringo scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Luis Perez for a 3-1 lead.
The Kernels scored again in the fourth. Chad Christensen began the inning with a walk and got to second on a wild pitch. Bryan Haar singled home Christensen to cut the Chiefs to 3-2. Reyes worked around two wild pitches by getting Williams to hit a ground ball to short and Richy Pedroza threw Haar out at the plate.
The Chiefs reclaimed their two-run lead in the sixth as Michael Schulze drew a one-out walk and Pedroza took a two-strike pitch the other way for a run-scoring double. Peoria got insurance in the seventh when Bean and Katz received back-to-back two-out walks. Perez followed with a triple over Zach Granite's head in center to score both runners and give the Chiefs a 6-2 advantage.
Cedar Rapids scored a run in the ninth for the 6-3 final. After the Chiefs turned a double play, Christensen scored on a single by Williams. After Tanner Vavra walked, Chris Perry came in and struck out Jon Murphy to end the game and get the save.
Reyes (5-5) pitched six innings allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts to earn the win. Jhonny Polanco tossed the next two hitless innings with a walk and a strikeout. Zach Loraine got two outs in the ninth giving up a run on two hits and two walks. Perry struck out the only batter he faced for his third save.
