Dragons Shut out TinCaps 5-0 to End Road Trip

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Four Dayton pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dragons slowed down the Fort Wayne offense on the way to a 5-0 victory on Thursday night. The win gave the Dragons a 2-5 record on their seven-game road trip to start the second half.

Fort Wayne had collected 32 hits and scored 19 runs in the first two games of the series Tuesday and Wednesday, batting .438 as a team, but they did not pick up their first hit on Thursday until the sixth inning.

Dragons starting pitcher Dan Langfield did not allow a base hit over four scoreless innings before reaching his 60-pitch limit. He walked one and struck out five. Reliever Tony Amezcua (1-2) followed Langfield and tossed three strong innings to earn the win, allowing the first Fort Wayne hit of the night in the sixth. Amezcua allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out four. Zack Weiss came on to start the eighth and allowed a pair of bloop hits before being replaced by Joel Bender with two outs in the inning. Bender got the final four outs to close out the game.

The Dragons scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. With one out, Carlton Daal lined a single to center field and Jamodrick McGruder followed with a hard grounder through the middle to move Daal to second. Jon Matthews then doubled down the first base line to bring in Daal and advance McGruder to third. Daniel Pigott's infield single scored McGruder to make it 2-0, and Matthews scored on Phillip Ervin's sacrifice fly to put the Dragons ahead 3-0.

The Dragons added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to extend their lead to 5-0. Tanner Rahier delivered a two-out single to drive in Matthews from third in the seventh, and Matthews singled with two outs in the eighth to bring in Gabriel Rosa from third.

The Dragons finished the game with 12 hits and had 36 in the three-game series. Rahier was 3 for 4 to raise his batting average to .289. He has had six multi-hit games in the seven games played in the second half. McGruder, Matthews, and Pigott each had two hits. The Dragons were 5 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

The Dragons notched their seventh shutout win of the season and their first June 11. The four Fort Wayne hits marked the fewest for a Dayton opponent since May 23 when West Michigan had three.

The Dragons return home to Fifth Third Field on Friday night to take on the Lake County Captains at 7:00 p.m. Nick Travieso (6-3, 3.31) will start for the Dragons against Lake County's Mitch Brown (0-6, 4.06). The series continues with games on Saturday (7 pm), Sunday (2 pm), and Monday (7 pm).
