Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
CLINTON, Iowa ( June 25, 2014 ) - Brett Phillips delivered the game-winning single to score Marc Wik in the top of the 12 th and Frederick Tiburcio finished off the LumberKings in his fourth inning of relief in the bottom half of the frame as the Quad Cities River Bandits came from behind to beat the LumberKings 4-3 Wednesday at Ashford University Field.
Clinton reliever Paul Fry struck out Thomas Lindauer and Jose Fernandez to start off the 12th in a 3-3 game. Marc Wik, who had entered the game in the 10th inning as a pinch-runner, doubled down the left field line in his first at-bat as a River Bandit. Clinton decided to turn to Nick Valenza, who promptly issued a wild pitch to advance Wik to third. Then, on a 3-2 pitch, Phillips drilled a line drive to right to score Wik and give the Bandits the 4-3 lead.
Quad Cities stuck with Tiburcio in the 12th. However, the right-hander plunked the leadoff man Jack Reinheimer with a breaking ball to start the frame. A 3U fielder's choice off the bat of Chantz Mack advanced Reinheimer to second before Tiburcio (1-1) struck out both Corey Simpson and Justin Seager to end the game. The right-hander set a career-high with four innings of relief and yielded just one hit and one walk while striking out six.
The River Bandits trailed 3-2 with one out in the eighth inning against Clinton reliever Seon Gi Kim. The right-hander issued a walk to Chase McDonald, who was lifted for pinch-runner James Ramsay. Ronnie Mitchell singled through the hole on the right side of the infield to place runners on the corners with one out. Kim then threw a high fastball that Brett Booth drilled off the wall in left-center, scoring Ramsay easily to tie the game. However, Mitchell was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning and then the next batter, Brian Holberton, flew out to left field against the new pitcher Fry to end the threat.
Clinton led 3-0 in the sixth with starter Jose Flores cruising. However, Phillips walked to lead off the frame and McDonald drilled his fourth home run of the season to straightaway center to put Quad Cities at the board at 3-2. McDonald went 1-for-3 with two walks while Phillips finished 3-for-5.
Fry (1-2) took the loss, despite fanning seven in his four innings of relief. He allowed a run on three hits with a walk as Clinton fell to 2-4 in the second half and 32-42 overall. The River Bandits improved to 3-2 and 38-36.
Quad Cities will send Michael Feliz (3-1, 2.68 ERA) to the mound looking for the sweep of the LumberKings tomorrow, who counter with Lars Huijer (3-5, 4.39).
