Great Lakes Loons News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - One night after being shut out for the first time, the Great Lakes Loons managed only a single run and lost for the second straight night against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark, 4-1. The Loons have lost three consecutive games dating back to Sunday's first half finale against Lansing, and are 0-2 to start the second half of the 2009 campaign.
Whitecaps starter Mark Sorenson (3-2) stifled the Loons over eight innings, allowing just six hits and one run in the best outing of his season. He picked up his third win of the year and his first in three starts against the Loons this year. Tyler Conn surrendered only an infield single in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
The Whitecaps came through with a pair of two-out, two-run singles to score their four runs. In the third inning, Brent Wyatt bounced one through the right side of the infield to give the âCaps a 2-1 lead, and Ben Guez singled through the left side of the infield in the sixth inning to make it a 4-1 game.
The Loons struck first in the second inning to grab a brief 1-0 lead. Kyle Russell led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Anthony Hatch, and scored on another groundout by Austin Gallagher.
Justin Miller pitched well for the Loons but took the loss, allowing all four runs in his six innings of work. Miller (3-4) allowed five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Luis Garcia worked two scoreless innings of relief for the Loons.
Great Lakes will turn to JonMichael Redding (9-2, 4.46) as it looks for its first win of the second half tomorrow night back in Comstock Park. He'll be opposed by southpaw Casey Crosby (5-2, 3.68) of the Whitecaps in a matchup featuring two highly-touted pitching prospects. Game time is 7:00 p.m., with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN 100.9 FM and loons.com.
