Bees Lose For the First Time in 2nd Half

Burlington, IA (June 26, 2009) - The Burlington Bees allowed seven runs in the final three innings and lost to Cedar Rapids 10-2 Friday night at Community Field. With the loss, the four-game series is tied at a game apiece.

Cedar Rapids got on the board first scoring one run in the top of the first. The Bees answered that run in the bottom of the inning. Fernando Garcia led off with a double, moved to third on a Nick Van Stratten ground-out and then scored on a Nick Francis single.

The Kernels retook the lead in the second scoring one run and then added to their lead in the third scoring one more run to lead 3-1. Neither team scored for the next four innings. Cedar Rapids added to their lead scoring three runs in the seventh inning. The Bees put up their final run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chase Fontaine walked to lead the inning off. He then moved to second on an Antonio Jimenez single and to third when Juan Rivera reached on a Fielder's Choice. Patrick Norris then hit a sacrifice fly to score Fontaine and the Bees trailed 6-2. Cedar Rapids wrapped up their scoring with four runs in the ninth.

Mike Lehmann got the start for the Bees. In five innings, he allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He took the loss to drop to 2-3. Manauris Baez pitched two innings allowing three runs on four hits. Eric Basurto made his Bees debut. He pitched one shutout inning allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Barry Bowden recorded two outs allowing four runs on one hit with three walks. Justin Garcia recorded the final out for the Bees.

The Bees had six hits in the game. Francis had two hits and was the only Bee with multiple hits.

The Bees continue the four-game series with Cedar Rapids Saturday night at Community Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. Bryan Casey is the scheduled starter.
