LANSING, Mich. - Byron Wiley provided two of Dayton's five doubles amidst a pair of early three-run rallies, helping the Dragons (1-1; 29-43) hand the Lansing Lugnuts (1-1; 27-44) a 7-3 defeat before a Friday night crowd of 6,842 at Oldsmobile Park.

Lansing starter Josh Wells (3-9) lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs in both the second and third innings to dubiously become the first Midwest League pitcher to nine losses in 2009.

In the second inning, RBI doubles from Kevyn Feiner and Andrew Means followed Wiley's leadoff double to stake Dayton out to the early 3-0 lead.

After the Lugnuts plated a solo run in the home half, Wiley and Kevin Coddington drilled consecutive RBI doubles in the third inning. A sixth run crossed the plate in the midst of an unusual double play. With the bases loaded, Means grounded to second baseman Justin McClanahan for the force at second base. While Coddington scored, Lansing shortstop Tyler Pastornicky noticed that Feiner had rounded third base too far and threw behind him to start a rundown for the third out.

The Lugnuts offense added a pair of unearned runs but never seriously threatened against Dayton starter Lance Janke (4-3) and a trio of relievers, who combined to strike out 12 Lansing batsmen.

Means closed out the scoring in the sixth with his first home run of the year.

In the losing effort, Brian Van Kirk and Mark Sobolewski each collected a pair of base hits.

Saturday night is Country Night at Oldsmobile Park, featuring LAFCU Fireworks following the 7:05 p.m. game.

Right-hander Chad Beck (0-3, 8.77) starts for the Lugnuts in the third affair of the four-game series, opposed by Dragons left-hander Matt Fairel (4-3, 2.96).
