West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the second straight night the West Michigan Whitecaps received great starting pitching as they downed the Great Lakes Loons, 4-1, at Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday night. Right hander Mark Sorensen tossed his longest outing of the year, and the ‘Caps won in the shortest nine inning game of the season.

Mark Sorensen was fantastic. Sorensen worked 8 innings, surrendering 6 hits, 1 earned run, no walks, and picking up 4 strikeouts. With the win, Sorensen improves his record to 3-2.

Great Lakes got the scoring started with Austin Gallagher's RBI ground-out that brought home Kyle Russell.

West Michigan's offense could be summed up in two at-bats. Brent Wyatt delivered a two-out, two-run single to score Joe Bowen and Gustavo Nunez for a 2-1 Whitecaps' lead.

Ben Guez delivered the second big hit of the game in the sixth as he knocked home Brandon Douglas and Billy Nowlin with two outs. Guez's hit upped the Whitecaps' lead to 4-1.

Great Lakes' starter Justin Miller was brilliant early on. His final line included 6 innings thrown, 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. He takes the loss and falls to 3-4.

Sorensen and Tyler Conn made the score hold up as they kept the powerful Loons offense in check.

Brandon Douglas was the only ‘Cap with more than one hit. Wyatt and Guez each had 2 RBI.

The Whitecaps and Loons will play game three of the series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. Saturday's game features Farm Bureau Insurance Fireworks after the game.
