Dragons Collect 15 Hits in 7-3 Win

Lansing, Mich.-Andrew Means hit his first home of the season and drove in three runs as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 7-3 on Friday night. The Dragons collected 15 hits as they evened their second half record to 1-1. Lansing fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Miguel Rojas collected three hits and Byron Wiley and Kevin Coddington each belted a pair of doubles. As a team, the Dragons established a season high with six doubles in the game.

Just as they did on Thursday, the Dragons had a big inning early. They collected four hits and scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Wiley doubled to right to start the inning and went to third on Coddington's ground out. Kevyn Feiner doubled to left to score Wiley, and one batter later, Means doubled to right to score Feiner. Means stole third on scored on Rojas' single to center to make it 3-0.

Lansing scored a single run in the bottom of the second, but Dayton answered with three runs in the top of the third. Mike Konstanty singled to center with one out and scored on Wiley's double to center. Coddington followed with a double to left to bring in Wiley. Two batters later, Coddington scored on Means' ground out to second to make it 6-1.

Dayton committed two errors in the bottom of the third as Lansing scored a pair of unearned runs to cut the Dragons lead to 6-3, but the Lugnuts could not get back on the scoreboard the rest of the night. Means hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth for Dayton to close out the scoring.

Dayton starting pitcher Lance Janke (4-3) went the first five innings for the win, allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned) with no walks and six strikeouts. Andrew Bowman tossed two perfect innings in relief of Janke. Mark James and Scott Gaffney each pitched a scoreless frame as well. Dragons pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters without issuing a walk or a hit batsman in the game.

All nine Dayton hitters had at least one hit by the end of the third inning. In addition to Rojas' three-hit game, Means, Konstanty, Wiley, and Coddington all had two hits.

The Dragons will play at Lansing again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Matt Fairel (4-3, 2.96) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Chad Beck (0-3, 8.77). The Dragons next home game is Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. vs. Fort Wayne at Fifth Third Field.

Notes: Means extended his hitting streak to nine straight games, one short of the Dragons team high for 2009...Means also stole his 12 base in 12 tries this season...The Dragons have had 27 hits in the two games in the second half...Dayton activated pitcher Aguido Gonzalez from the disabled list before the game.
