Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
The Chattanooga Lookouts (3-3)(29-47) welcomed the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (2-4)(31-40) for the first home game of the second half of the season and the first for the Lookouts since June 4th. Chattanooga started the 10-game home stand off right, winning a high scoring affair by a score of 14-10 after the rain tried to dampen the game.
Some afternoon rain showers pushed the start of the game back nearly half an hour, but the Lookouts got the scoring started early. In the bottom of the second inning, Nutrition World Player of the Game, Casio Grider launched a ball off the top half of the scoreboard to plate O'Koyea Dickson and Angel Sanchez, who had both reached base via the walk. The blast, estimated at 392 feet, was the second of the year for Grider.
The Lookouts opened the floodgates in the very next inning as the first two batters who came to the plate, Darnell Sweeney and Noel Cuevas, each took a free ride to first base. Daniel Mayora and Dickson followed their efforts with RBI singles, but the big fly of the inning was hit by Scott Schebler off of Pensacola's starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (L, 7-6) . His 15th home run of the season drove in three runs, giving the Lookouts a commanding 8-1 lead . The dinger put him atop the home run leaderboard among active Southern League players.
Outfielder Yorman Rodriguez got some of the runs back for the Blue Wahoos, hitting a grand slam to dead center field in the fourth . In the bottom of that inning Cuevas continued his hot hitting at home with a RBI triple, making it the 13th consecutive home game that he's hit in. He's now hitting .362 (17-for-47) in those 13 games. That run gave the Lookouts a three-run lead, but it didn't stop the Blue Wahoos from continuing to chip away at the lead slowly, bringing the game within just one run by the sixth inning.
It was in the bottom of the sixth that the Lookouts scratched out some insurance runs. Even though the inning led off with two straight strikeouts, Mayora started a rally with a two-out single. Dickson doubled him in before a single and a walk loaded the bases for Sanchez, who hit a double of his own to put two more into the run total, extending that one run lead to four.
Darnell Sweeney was on a nine-game hitting streak coming into the game, but was hitless on the night when he came up to bat in the seventh inning. He extended the streak to 10 games in style, hitting one out to the Right Field Pavilion putting two more on the board, helping to propel the Lookouts to a 14-10 win. The win puts the Lookouts at .500 for the first time since April 6th when they were 2-2.
Wednesday morning baseball means it's time for the Businessman Special. Take a long lunch break at the ballpark to see Lookouts right-hander Matt Shelton (2-1, 3.67) go up against Jon Moscot (4-6, 2.82) of the Blue Wahoos.
Notes: During Sweeney's 10 - game hitting streak, he's batting .409 (18-for-44). If you go back to the start of June, Sweeney is batting .321 for the month.
