M-Braves Fall Short in Birmingham Series Opener

Birmingham, AL -The Mississippi Braves fell behind early and had two different comeback attempts fall short as the Birmingham Barons won 6-3 on Tuesday night in front of a sellout crowd at Regions Field.

Trailing 4-2 entering the 7th,Kyle Kubitzablasted a leadoff home run, his fourth of the year, to pull it to a one-run game. The M-Braves (3-3; 42-33) loaded the bases with one out but stranded the bags full and wouldn't score again.

Birmingham (3-2; 32-43) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh whenKevan Smithhit a two-out, two-run double to left-center, pulling ahead 6-3.

Jason Hursh(6-5) suffered the loss, allowing all six earned runs on ten hits over seven innings. He struck out four but also walked a season-high four.

Birmingham struck first in the second frame.Rangel Raveloand Smith singled back-to-back to lead off the frame, andJosh Richmondgrounded into a force at second.Luis Sierrasingled to drive in a run andJeremy Farrellhit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

The Barons tacked on another in the third afterJared Mitchelldrew a leadoff walk andTrayce Thompsondrove him home with a double.

The M-Braves came clawing back with a two-run fourth inning.Cedric HunterandSeth Lomanhit back-to-back doubles to make it 3-1, then Kubitza hit a sacrifice fly to pull it to 3-2.

Birmingham benefited from another leadoff walk to Mitchell in the fifth. Thompson drew a one-out walk to put men and first and second, and Ravelo made it 4-2 Barons with an RBI single.

Mississippi threatened heavily againstMike Recchia(3-2) all day, but the Birmingham right-hander staved off all threats to pick up the win. He allowed three earned on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

Kevin Vancepitched around three walks over 2/3 innings andNestor Molinapitched the final two innings for his second save.

Jose Perazagot a single in the first inning to extend his hit-streak to 20 games, with the last six coming for the M-Braves since his promotion from advanced class-A Lynchburg.

The Braves and Barons square off on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 PM CT in the annual Rickwood Classic at historic Rickwood Field. Right-handerGreg Rosstakes the mound for the Braves in his double-A debut against Barons right-handerNick McCully(3-5, 5.81).
