Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 24, 2014) - The Tennessee Smokies (4-2/37-38) used good pitching, timely hitting, and three costly Generals (2-4/33-42) errors to pick up a rained shortened, seven-inning 6-2 victory Tuesday at the Ballpark in Jackson. The Generals were 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position on the night and Jack Marder collected three hits, but it was not enough as Jackson fell for the fourth time in the second half.

The start was delayed 1 hour and 43 minutes by rain but the later start did not phase the Smokies, as they started the scoring early. With one out and the bases loaded in the first, Rubi Silva singled to score Stephen Bruno with the game's first run. Anthony Giansanti followed with another RBI single that scored Christian Villanueva and Tennessee was up early 2-0.

The Smokies added to their lead in the second as Villanueva doubled for the second time in the game to bring home Bruno for a 3-0 lead.

Jack Marder (3x3, R, 2B) doubled with one out in the third and came around to score on Leon Landry's (1x3, RBI, BB) single to put Jackson on the board and cut the Tennessee lead to 3-1.

Bruno led off the fifth with a single and was brought home on Villanueva's third double to increase the Smokies' lead to 4-1 after five innings.

With one out in the sixth, an error by Ketel Marte (1x4, RBI) allowed Jeudy Valdez to reach base. After another error Jae-Hoon Ha hit his eighth double of the season and Valdez scored. Bruno followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Elliot Soto and the lead ballooned to 6-1 for Tennessee.

Jackson added one more run in the seventh as Kevin Rivers (1x3, R, 2B) doubled and scored on a single by Marte to the cut the lead to 6-2. The Generals had a chance to add to their total as Patrick Kivlehan (0x4) came up with the bases loaded, but struck out to end the inning and that also ended his 29-game on base streak and Southern League best 17-game hitting streak.

The rains returned in the top of the eighth inning and ended the game early with the Smokies earning their fourth win in five games in Jackson this season.

Tyler Olson (3-4, 4.17) suffered his fourth loss of the year. He had a shaky first two innings, but settled down before giving up two unearned runs in the sixth. Olson finished his 6.0 innings having given up eight hits and six runs, but only three runs were earned due to three Jackson errors. He also struck out six Smokies.

Dae-Eun Rhee (4-3, 3.24) earned his fourth win on the season as he went 5.2 innings and allowed only one run on three hits. Lendy Castillo came in to pick up his first save of the season for Tennessee.

The Generals and Smokies will play a midweek matinee Wednesday in game two of the series. Jackson will look to start Stephen Landazuri (3-2, 3.77) on the mound as Matt Loosen (3-2, 5.04) will be on the bump for Tennessee. The game will begin at 12:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
