Smokies Rally Late Giving Generals Third Straight Loss

June 25, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. (JUNE 25, 2014) - The Tennessee Smokies (5-2/38-38) won their second straight over the Generals (2-5/33-43) on a hot Wednesday afternoon, 4-2. The Generals have dropped five of six to the Smokies at home this season and have lost three straight.

Neither pitcher allowed a run until the fifth inning when Dario Pizzano (1x3, R, HR, 2 RBI), who has been in a slump the last few weeks, hit his fifth home run of the season to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.

It did not take the Smokies long to match Jackson, as they led off the sixth with a pair of singles. With one out Dustin Geiger doubled to score Stephen Bruno and Rubi Silva followed with a bunt single that scored Christian Villanueva, giving Tennessee a 2-1 lead. Anthony Giansanti then ended the inning by grounding into a double play. But the double play was turned unconventionally forcing a tag a second which allowed Geiger to score the Smokies' third run for a 3-1 lead after six innings.

The hill became a little steeper for the Generals in the ninth, as Giansanti hammered his second homer of the season with two outs to increase the Tennessee lead to 4-1.

Jackson led off the bottom of the ninth with a double from Julio Morban (2x4, R, 2B) and the third single on the day from Patrick Kivlehan (3x4). Then with one out, Pizzano hit a sacrifice fly to score Morban to close the gap to 4-2, but the Generals could pull no closer as they lost their third straight game.

Matt Loosen (4-2, 4.73) earned the victory as he allowed just one run on five hits and struck out five Generals. He faced just two over the minimum through the first four innings before allowing the home run to Pizzano. Frank Bautista came out of the bullpen in the ninth to claim his first save of the season. Stephen Landazuri (3-2, 3.21) held the Smokies scoreless through his five innings of work, but ultimately earned a no-decision as Cam Hobson (4-6, 3.45) picked up the loss as he gave up the three Tennessee runs in the sixth.

Kivlehan began a new hitting streak Wednesday with his third three-hit performance of the season to go along with Morban's two-hit game for the offensive highlights for Jackson. SS Ketel Marte (0x4) saw his 11-game hit streak come to an end on Wednesday.

The Generals and Smokies will meet in the middle game of the series Thursday at the Ballpark in Jackson. Victor Sanchez (3-3, 4.26) will get the nod as the starter for Jackson and he will be opposed by Corey Black (2-5, 3.30) from Tennessee. Thursday is Dollar Night, presented by MobileNation. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
